Military Conscription (Persuasive Essay)
Military Conscription
Conscription, or more boldly the draft, has not been in place for some thirty years. While some people cringe at the thought of reinstating the draft, others have different views. This short paper will speak of those different views and the reasons why conscription of military service may not be such a bad idea after all.
Having young men or even women drafted in the military would benefit everyone. The soldiers would benefit from gaining the knowledge and on–the–job training for a career when they get out and the militaries would not be suffering from the shortage of troops as they are today. It is a win–win situation!
Having served in a country where conscription is the law (and still is today), most South...show more content...
You as the parent know you cannot afford to send all the children to college. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to secure your children's future? If it were a requirement for men and women to join a branch of the Armed Forces upon graduating from high school, their dreams could become reality! Young people could receive training and money to go to college and fulfill those dreams. If the draft were reinstated there would be more troops to support the current crisis in Iraq. There would also be less turn around of the same troops redeploying to remote parts of the world. Many soldiers are gone from their families for a year, only to return to remote parts of the world after being home for a few months.
Think also, the possibility of forcing young criminals between the ages of 18 and 25 to join the military. Maybe due to joining the military, these young criminals would be reformed into honorable, self–respecting individuals or become leaders of our great nation. In addition, if military conscription were implemented, the tax payers would not have to pay for the juvenile criminals to be locked up in maximum or minimum security centers.

Persuasive Essay About Alcohol
Alcoholism, What is there to be done about it? In this day and age, when it comes to alcohol consumption and laws of alcohol use in countries around the world, many people debate about whether the legal drinking age should be raised, lowered, or stay the same. What about a society where alcohol would be illegal?? Well, when it comes to the sheer number of deaths that occur from drunk driving alone, you'd end up agreeing with it. To add to this, addiction is always a risk to be taken into consideration, because it leads to alcohol poisoning, eventually causing death. All in all, alcohol is something that is just as addictive as any other drug, and should it be treated as an illegal drug as well. The following are just some of the many reasons why this should be so.
First off, alcohol addiction and abuse among teenagers today is a bigger problem than ever before. The root of the problem lies in the fact that the teens are so exposed to the culture of this day and age, leading them to where they have easy access to alcohol. For example, their parents may already be alcoholics, and it's merely a few bad decisions later which could cause the child to have a few drinks and cloud their judgement. This is a big problem because their young bodies have never encountered anything like alcohol before, so in turn, the body does not know how to process it, and therefore leads to their downfall. A publication released by the National Institute of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse (NIAA) suggests that by age 18, an astounding 60% of US teens would have had at least one drink. Moreover, according to the NIAA, youth between the ages of 12 and 20 will often binge drink as well.
Secondly, regardless of age, people still tend to make bad decisions that ultimately lead to their downfalls. As a result, whatever the legal drinking age is, people will still be ignorant and follow their own ways instead of what is truly beneficial to them. According to Statistics Canada, in 2015, more than 72,000 incidents of drunk driving were reported by police departments around Canada at a rate of 201 accidents per 100,000 population. From this information, it can be concluded that people will still be irresponsible and will abuse their privileges in
Persuasive Essay On Online Classes
Most people think highly of online classes; get to work from home, get to work on a flexible schedule, and anyone can do it. Though no one has heard the cons of taking one. I personally took three semesters of online classes in high school and had a horrible experience. Because of loose scheduling, poor communication, and the focus needed, online classes are not suitable for procrastinators. To give a better understanding, I will summarize my experience with the class. Me, being a procrastinator, thought to myself: I'll just work on the weekends and if I don't finish the class by the end of the school year, I can finish within the first few weeks of summer. This was a god awful plan. Unsurprisingly, close to nothing was accomplished on the weekends. Friends would ask me to hang out every weekend, and I did every time. Why would I want to work on my class on the weekend when I could be having fun? I would later regret this decision. On the days I stayed home and could have worked on the class, I completed nothing. On these days, I would tell myself: I'll just complete what I didn't do this weekend next weekend. This rarely happened. Thus, the cycle of getting nothing accomplished started. I disregarded my class for most of the first semester of junior year. With only nine assignments out of eighty finished after the first semester of the school year, I was immensely behind. I told myself to get my act together during second semester and grind out these two semesters

Persuasive Essay On Sports
Competitive sports
Do you have a passion, something you love to do more than anything? Imagine people trying to stop you from doing what you love because they think it's not useful or a waste. Some people say competitive sports cost too much and they are way too dangerous for young kids to participate in. However, for many youth, competitive sports play a positive role. When kids play competitive sports, they are happier and they learn how to be healthy. Also, they learn life lessons that they will need for the future.
One thing that is a positive outcome in sports is the overflowing happiness people get when they participate in competitive sports. One example is that "children who were involved in sports were more assertive, had greater confidence in their skills and physical appearance, and reported more positive feelings than those who didn't participate. (Merkal, Donna, Youth sport: positive and negative impact on young athletes, 201, May 31)." If children hold an extreme love for the sport they play, most children use that sport as an escape. Playing sports blows off steam and helps people relax. "Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research ,Exercise: 7 benefits of regular physical activity, 1998)." Playing sports can help bring families or other kids together to build strong bonds. "It appears that US children are healthy and happy as they engage in this traditional pastime, and families report higher levels of satisfaction if their children participate. (Macdonald, Brian, Kids in Sports, Part 5: Can sports help shy kids to make friends?, 2009)." A pat on the back from a parental figure is enough to keep kids going and doing their best. Because sports make children happier, they are more prone to keep playing which all in all makes children happier and it teaches kids to do what makes them happy. With suicide being the second biggest fatality for adolescents doing what makes them happy can be a life or death situation.
Correspondingly, fitness is a huge plus side of competitive sports. Diabetes is affecting around 8.6% of America's population. "More than 29 million American
Writing A Persuasive Essay
It's a simple enough idea, write an essay about a topic for credit. I'll admit I've written good essays in the past, I just have one issue with this topic; I am not a persuasive person. I don't have a passion to write about, or an idea in my head. Even if I was passionate about something, I doubt I have the skill to convince you. My arguments would consist of why I like the topic (or hate it) with an extreme bias, and I doubt that you would be moved. I couldn't convince you that the long hours of school take a toll on the students. Even if others agree with me, the way I word things, the lack of passion and my lack of being able to be assertive is the reason why I can't write this essay. First things first, the way I word my thoughts. Regardless...show more content...
You'll get this definition: "The writer takes a stand on an issue–either "for" or "against"–and builds the strongest possible argument to win over the reader. In a persuasive essay, it's the writer's job to convince the reader to accept a particular point of view or take a specific action." Along with a bunch of How Tos. I've have taken a stand that is very passive–aggressive, on why I can't write this essay. I know what you're thinking, this is ridiculous. Just think of it like this, as you sit there reading me ramble on and give excuses. You're starting to listen. Yes, you have been in my spot before, lack of passion words don't form right and you're just not clear enough. I see the irony here, this very essay, it contradicts itself. A persuasive essay on why I can't write a persuasive essay. In the end it's genius, I'm not faking an opinion or sing someone's thoughts. You might have considered this option before but it seemed too stupid. You looked up prompt after prompt. Nothing. When you finally settle you know it's not your best work and the grade shows. Or you did it last minute, reworded someone else's essay. You've even considered turning in nothing, I mean what's the point

Persuasive Essay On Freedom Of Speech
Freedom of speech is the right to speak your beliefs without risk of punishment, guaranteed by the First Amendment. This right raises some controversy though, on whether or not this right should be limited due to the fact that some might take advantage of their freedom of speech and use it to offend or insult a person or group. Freedom of speech should be protected to both advance and defend out honor.
Our freedom of speech is an honor to have and it should not be taken for granted. Our society is based off of our freedom to speak our beliefs, and sometimes –more often than not– our beliefs contradict the beliefs of another. "Protecting this right [freedom of speech] respects the moral dignity of individuals as reasonable beings with their own ideas, beliefs, and values." (Ruger, 5) We cannot silence those that offend others with their beliefs, as they are expressing themselves and have the right to be heard of. An environmentalist for example, believes that we should release less carbon dioxide into the air, while a growing business might believe that the amount of greenhouse gases is fine. Neither of them nor their beliefs are wrong, and we should not silence the business because they think differently and we believe them to be wrong. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and to express them accordingly. "It's always easier to defend someone's right to say something with which you agree. But in a free society, you also have a duty to defend speech with which you

Effective Negotiations
Introduction
In business the most vital skill is communication. In a setting where ideas are the business, it is imperative to be able to communicate those ideas effectively. The most important part of communication is the persuasive message. Communication is defined as a process by which we give and express meaning in an effort to create shared understanding. This process requires a huge range of skills in intrapersonal and interpersonal processing, speaking, listening, questioning, analyzing, observing, and evaluating[1]. Use of these processes is developmental and transfers to all areas of life: home, school, community, work, and beyond. It is through communication that...show more content...
Before people buy into a suggestion they want to see that the persuader is flexible enough to respond to their concerns. Compromises can often become better, more sustainable, shared solutions.
3. Thinking the secret of persuasion lies in presenting great arguments. Great arguments matter, but they are only one part. Other factors matter just as much, such as credibility and their ability to create an equally beneficial position for themselves and their audience, (a win win situation), to connect on the correct emotional level and to communicate through words that makes arguments come alive.
4. Assuming persuasion is a one–time effort. Persuasion is a process. Common solutions are rarely reached on the first try.
Effective Negotiations
Effective negotiations are a method of working a compromise or agreement in which the parties to the negotiations try to achieve their goals in reasonable and practical manner through the process of give and take using effective communication.
Negotiation is a central activity of our lives. Knowingly or unknowingly we negotiate every day, with our colleagues, and bosses, family members, friends, strangers, and some times even with our–selves. We use negotiation to realize our expectations, to achieve goals, work out a problem or simply to avoid trouble. Sometimes we negotiate to assist others in resolving their problems. Negotiation is a problem solving

Topic: Organ Donation
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to donate their organs and tissues when they die and to act upon their decision to donate.
Thesis Statement: The need is constantly growing for organ donors and it is very simple to be an organ donor when you die.
I. INTRODUCTION
A. Attention material/Credibility Material: How do you feel when you have to wait for something you really, really want? What if it was something you couldn't live without? c. You can choose to donate any needed organs or you can specify which organs or tissues you wish to donate.
2. Organ donation is very important.
a. The following poem by Robert Test entitled, "To Remember Me," shows the importance of organ donation.
"Give my sight to the man who has never seen a sunrise, a baby's face or love in the eyes of a woman. Give my heart to a person whose heart has caused nothing but endless days of pain... Take my bones, every muscle, every fiber and nerve in my body and find a way to make a crippled child walk...Take my cells, if necessary, and let them grow so that, someday, a speechless boy will shout at the crack of a bat and a deaf girl will hear the sound of rain against her window
b. Not only is this a problem nationally but also it is a big problem right here at home in Colorado.
1) Nationally, there are over 120,000 people waiting as of November 1, 2011. As of November 7, 2011, there are 1,142 people from Colorado that are on the organ waiting list (Life Source: Statistics).

Persuasive Essay On My Writing Style
Among words on paper, one hardly finds oneself to question their particular style or preferences in writing. I as a writer can tell you how the basis of my "madness" works, but who are we joking, that would just be utterly extensive and boring. Within the different types of genres one person can write about, I find persuasive, argumentative, and research/informational writings to be the most appealing. I tend to be a very opinionative person, meaning that if I hear any of some sort of injustice or intriguing thought said, don't think twice of hearing my stance on that topic. Therefore, especially with persuasive essays, I will always find my pen promptly trying to catch up, while my thoughts keep rushing in, in order to get on paper. It's a formative writing piece, that I can easily state my claim and through using accurate information, will no longer be an assignment, more or less it will turn into a conversation between my writing and my thoughts. Nevertheless, when it comes to...show more content...

When I always hear the dreadful words coming from an English teacher, "Well class, today we will be having a free–write", my heart drops. Fear, of the possibility of being the last individual writing, encountering multiple issues from knowing what to write about to what shall be the focus of the story. Perhaps, my inability of writing any creative piece can be layback to the constant issue of knowing where and how to start and finish. Nonetheless, moving away from genres, my ultimate weakness would have to be mechanics. I mean, I understand the basics of noun, verb, punctuation, and so forth, but I regularly find myself re–reading my writing pieces over and over and still finding everlasting
Persuasive Essay On The Opioid Crisis
Opioids are taking over the United States with its addictive composition, once patients are take opioids there is no escaping. The drug directed from opium which is obtained from a plant (Katz). Opioids are most commonly found in prescription pill from making underground sales more common. Since opioids are derived from a plant this makes the reality of home grown drugs more of an issue. American citizens overdosing on opioids is what is sparking the crisis because opioid "overdoses killed more people last year than guns or car accidents" (Katz). Opioids are extremely addictive and that is why so many citizens overdose on these types of drugs. After patients become hooked on opioids their body constantly is needing more and more opium to escape they pain they think they are enduring. The overdosing of Americans is not a small percentage of the population either, it is estimated that "over two million people in America have problem with opioids" proving this growing issue is an ongoing crisis (Katz). The United States government needs to take action immediately to the opioid crisis because doctors are overprescribing patients because they seemingly overreact to pain, and opioids are one of the most addictive drug types in the world. The opioid crisis is not just now becoming an issue, but recent numbers of overdoses are raising even more concern and attention. The issue is with how citizens deal with the crisis because opioids are finding their way into the wrong hands. The crisis is so severe that "everyday more than 90 people die overdosing on opioids" ("Opioids"). That number will only grow if nothing is done to stop people from overdosing. The entire opioid crisis started from patients misusing opioid medicines. In the year 2015 alone "33,000 Americans died from opioid overdose" ("Opioid"). So many Americans fall victim to opioids and they can become extremely addicting. Once a patient's body is exposed to opium, the body will then adjust to needin opium by the larger quantity and patients will soon take more and more causing an overdose. Unfortunately, synthetic drugs are on the rise (Katz). Fentanyl is a prime example of a synthetic drug that is taking over America by storm. It can be mass produced in a
Persuasive Speech : Effective Communication
In writing it's important to have an understanding of what you're trying to convey for your audience in addition to how you you will present your ideas. Effective communication extends beyond having well organized writing expressed in complete and coherent sentences. The style, tone and clarity of writing must also be considered, as they are constantly changing relative to the audience. Again, analyzing one's audience and purpose is essential to successful writing. Appropriately, when choosing the most effective language, it is important to consider the document objective as well as the reader. In essence, this idea of effective use of language has been the overarching theme of this online English course. Each writing assignment...show more content...
Thus, the style of language used within the text was often industry specific and possessed a more academic feeling. For example, in the text I often used abbreviations and slang acceptable within the discourse such as, SCM Supply chain management, KPI Key performance indicator, and RDT Resource dependence. The word choice in this assignment is indicative of that fact that language is chosen in a manner that is appropriate for both the audience and the purpose of the writing.
Furthermore, perhaps the greatest contrast and the most evident of how language works differently in various types of writing is the discussion blog post. The blog post allowed the class to engage in different types of formality of language. The formality of the language one uses should match the formality of the situation and the relationship between the writer and reader. Therefore, as the public audience was a class of online students taking a required writing course in the summer, the formality of my writing has often been very informal. For example, in my blog post addressing my concern over the unworthy power of Beyoncé I wrote, "It was the year 2008 when the world was blessed with the images of Beyoncé (unapologetically) dancing around in a leotard. Not only is Beyoncé's single lady video one of her most notable hits it begins her what is now a decade long relationship ending spree" (Marquis, 2016 ). The formality
Reflection Of A Persuasive Reflection
Reflection of a Persuasive Essay by Vickie Hale In my revision, I decided to incorporate actionable feedback from the feedback I received. The feedback I received was that my essay needed more clarification, I choose to use this feedback to help make my argument more developed, I wanted to create a better thought out essay and I worked on the clarification of my argument as well as renewed my research. With that, I did some critical thinking to help work through the weak areas of my essay which was the structure and syntax. Therefore, I incorporated these suggestions because they helped me to improve my essay and help me to create a more persuasive essay. Without these changes alongside the small revisions, I made, I do not believe my essay would have been as well–written so they were much needed. My biggest challenges came from not being able to pin down my argument, it took me a while to come find a side to an argument that wasn't vague. Because, I usually write in a creative way, which does not necessarily have to be persuasive, I usually write fictional stories and people getting the understanding from the experiences of the characters is the outcome, but with persuasive writing, you are trying to get your readers to not only agree with your side of the argument but to see what and why you are arguing your side in the first place. This became difficult for me because I kept feeling like my argument was not central and a little vague. I worked on trying to help my readers understand what and why I was arguing my side of the argument. I had to think about who was reading my essay and this helped. What I could have done differently is choose a more central argument, I believe it would have reduced my challenges. This question is hard for me to answer because I did not receive but one peer feedback, the feedback I incorporated concerning my exploration of the issue was more clarification because that was one of the problems my peer review pointed out. I worked on my clarification because it is one of the main elements, that is needed when you are writing a persuasive essay or any essay for that matter. Clarification gives the essay structure so your readers can have a full understanding of your
Persuasive Essay On Gender Equality
We all as human beings deserve gender equality, equal rights and we need to be unified as one. What I mean by that is, it is too much hate already going on in this world and we do not need anymore of it. We all need to love and respect each other no matter what. No matter race, sex, sexual orientation, religion, creed or ethnicity we, all need to love one another like brothers and sisters. If you do not agree with who a person chooses to be, the least you can do is respect their decision. Women and men should be treated equally as well. If they are in the same work place they should be getting equal pay. We all bleed the same, so their should not be a reason to be treated differently from each other. Over, the years woman and men had very different roles to play in society. Women in the past were expected to cook and clean and take care of the children, while men would go to work bring home the money and discipline the children. Now "Women have virtually all professional and social roles, including those once dominated by men, and men have taken on many roles, such as raising a child, that were formerly occupied mostly by women"(Living With Diversity 9.2). Roles have been switched in the this society of men and women working. Women and men should be allowed to work in whichever workforce that they choose. No one should be afraid to say what they want to accomplish in the future. If a woman wants to be a firefighter she should be able to do that without anyones remarks. It

Reflection on my Persuasive Speech
All communication is an attempt to influence, highlights Back (1951) and, by extension, hinders the audience 's preconceptions on a topic. Thinking about communication and particular verbal strategies and theory both brought forth excellent criticisms and compliments ofor my persuasive speech. It 's purpose being to persuade the audience in favour of Britian 's exit from the European Union. My persausive speech aimed to educate the audience further on a topic and opinion, New Zealanders tend to distance themselves from. It also aimed to initiate a shift in attitudes towards my viewpoint.
Attitudes, Values and Beliefs
Prior to my speech, I assessed the probable attitudes, values and beliefs of my audience. O 'Keefe (2001) describes an attitude as a person 's overall evaluation of something with the notion of an attitude being the evaluative judgment of (reaction to) something. Social judgment theory is a persuasion theory proposed by Sherif and Hovland (1961), defined by Griffin, (2012) as the prior observation and evaluation of an idea by comparing it with the audience 's current position. When assessing this position, I assumed the speech was clearly catered to a familiar audience. The audience consisted of similary aged peers from assumed similar backgrounds, because of this I was relatively easy to relate too– creating idealisatic Identification, a persuasive communication technique outlined by Burke (1950). Persuasive Essay
"Your assignment is to write a persuasive essay and present it to the class in a week. You will be graded based on how convincing it is. Today we will be choosing topics," announced Mr. Bowerbank, my 7th grade English teacher and ruler of classroom 110. My class simultaneously groaned at the prospect of work. I simply lifted my head with intrigue as it was already May and about time we had our first essay. He then proceeded to give examples of topics we could choose and gave us some time to think before we had to tell him our topic. My classmates were already rushing to tell the teacher their idea lest someone else steal it. That meant the usual abortion, death penalty, or drug use topics were out. I really couldn't think of anything and the teacher was slowly making his way through the remaining students like an executioner beheading criminals in a line. I have always thought that he would make a marvelous supervillain if he had a curly mustache, a tophat, and a cape. Eventually my name was called. I slowly dragged myself over to his desk. Even sitting down, he still seemed to tower over me. "What is your topic Cindy?" As usual in such desperate times, my mind turned to food. "Waffles are better than pancakes." I figured that a waffle was just a differently shaped pancake with a nicer texture. "Hmm. Excellent topic. I look forward to your essay!" I survived to live yet another day. As I walked to lunch, I went around and asked everyone the age old question: "Do you like
Persuasive Essay On Nuclear Weapons
Nuclear weapons are one of, if not the most dangerous weapons in the world today and they are one of the biggest issues the world faces at this current moment. They have the capability of destroying entire cities and then some that could result in millions of deaths within seconds. Radiation from the blasts would kill even more people throughout years to come. They were first used in 1945 at the end of World War II, when the United States dropped Little Boy and Fat Man in Hiroshima and Nagasaki to 'save' the lives of American soldiers. Since then, a nuclear arms race was born and it's becoming more of a concern as time moves forward. Albert Einstein, who was the creator of the nuclear bomb once said "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." Countries should not have access to nuclear weapons because it destroys the environment, there is a possibility of a nuclear war that will end in mass destruction of the world, and countries could save both revenue and resources. There are many nuclear bombing tests that happen throughout each year and it's extremely unhealthy for the environment let alone if a nuclear war happened. According to scientists, even if a small percentage of the worlds nuclear bombs were set off during a war, it would have an extremely devastating effect on humanity (Jha). Temperatures would drop quickly because there would be so much black smoke in the air that the smoke would absorb
How To Write A Persuasive Essay
Writing essay is one of the things that I used to dislike before. For me, writing an essay was a difficult and boring thing. However, I change my mind when I was doing the assignment, "Persuasive Essay". This essay is my first English essay, and it was a quite challenging task for me. In this assignment , I learned a lot. For example, to use the transition words to connect each paragraph. Also, to use other writer's words to make my idea be more powerful. Thus, this assignment improves my writing skills a lot. Before, I didn't know that I have to use the transition words in an essay. For me, an essay is constituted by many single paragraphs. However, everything is different when I was doing this assignment, Persuasive Essay. I noticed that every paragraph should support theme to make an essay stronger. Also, after Ms. Weller marked this assignment, I learned that using transition words can create a powerful link between my ideas. For example, using the word, "in addition" , can make two paragraphs connect to each other. It also can make readers understand the logic of an essay. Therefore, I' ve learned the writing skill which can make each paragraph be connected from this assignment....show more content...
I really enjoyed it. As I was researching, I also could read other writer's literature. I notice that using the quote or data can make the theme of an essay be stronger and more persuasive. For example, I use the quote from Steven Crowder, the author of "TheTop 5 Reasons College May Be Waste Of Time In 2015", to support my idea, going to college is unnecessary. The quote not only can make an essay more cogent but also can make readers agree with writer's thinking. Thus, I've learned to use the quote to make my essay to more
