Narrative Essay On A Boy Scout Camp
I was driving in a car with my friend, Trevor. We were heading to a boy scout camp for a camping trip with an unknown agenda to us. We both had packed what we usually need for a camping trip which was a daypack, a tent and tarp, a couple pairs of clothes, and our uniform. Neither of us were as certain to why we were heading up to this camp and what we would get out of this weekend.
About two months earlier, our boy scout troop had an election for the Order of the Arrow, also known as the Boy Scout National Honor Society. Our peers in the troop were told to pick a few scouts that exemplified the Scout Oath and Law in their everyday life. At the end of the night, five scouts were chosen. Trevor and I, being two of them. Both of us knew that we were going to attend this trip on the same date because we both usually do everything together.
When arriving at the campsite, we were told to bring all of our equipment and head up to the dining hall for check–in. We waited in lines for several minutes before being given the "okay" for attending their weekend event. Afterwards, we were told to go up to field to set up our tents, but before we left to do that we said goodbye to Trevor's dad. When we were setting up our tents, we felt scared and lonely because the only people we knew were each other. But, we knew that would last that long. We headed back down to the dining hall, where we were each given a letter. These letters told us which table to sit at which we eventually learned
Research Experience
I have proactively engaged in research activity throughout my undergraduate program. I had my first research experience in Dr. B Anand's lab, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, during my second year. The aim of the project was to study the non–fluorescent beta–barrel structured proteins and engineer its amino acid sequence to make them into fluorescent ones. Our approach was mainly based upon the studies of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) from a jellyfish Aequorea victoria. Tools like Python programming language, Gromacs, Ribosome, PROSS, and Pymol were used to study the structural components of non–fluorescent proteins. I gained invaluable...show more content...
I was challenged with cloning ydeH gene into the pJT118 plasmids which are green light sensitive. The ydeH gene produces a protein named diguanylate cyclase, which induces the production of c–di–GMP in Rosetta strain. This project gave me an opportunity to participate and win silver at International Bio–molecular design competition (BIOMOD) 2012 held at Wyss Institute, Harvard University, USA. Most of the molecular genetic techniques were extensively used in my project. During this internship, apart from gaining deeper technical experience, I realized that I could work on a research problem with a certain degree of independence, figuring out right approaches and proposing useful experiments. I acquired more confidence in my aptitude for research and it has been boosted while working on my undergraduate projects.
As a part of my undergraduate thesis, I worked on a project 'Extraction and analysis of beauvericin, a mycotoxin produced by Beauveria bassiana and its cytotoxic effects on the SF–21 (immortalized pupal ovarian cells isolated from Spodoptera frugiperda) cell line' under the guidance of Dr. Gurvinder Kaur Saini, IIT Guwahati. Beauvericin metabolite was extracted from the Beauveria bassiana isolates UB17 and UB21, by using n–hexane extraction method and the presence of beauvericin was analyzed and confirmed with High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Mass spectroscopy (MS). Cytotoxic
Forensic Evidence Vs Factual Evidence
In an investigation, true, factual evidence is most needed. If eyewitness accounts are used, witnesses might lie of lean his/her argument to one side of the case or another. Eyewitnesses might forget minor parts of the story or sway the argument because of their feelings toward certain things involved in the case. Because forensic evidence is true, can't lie, or sway its opinion, and provides tangible, visible evidence, it is most important and most helpful in a trial. There are many examples of how forensic evidence is more important than other types of evidence to be presented in a court case. This evidence is giving clues to what really happened rather than swaying the case with biased information. It presents the evidence in a straightforward
Examples Of Factual Claim
An example of a factual claim found in the film, was on the crime scene in which the detective shot a guy in the blue Mercedes. The detective claim that he was driving and cut the blue Mercedes off and the driver got mad and started to pulled up beside him waving a gun. However, he said he tried to leave but the guy fired a shot and he shot back in self–defense. Then when he opened the door the driver fell out dead. The interpretive claim to go along with it is, when detective Graham (Don Cheadle) asked the officer at the scene were there any witness that could prove the story of the detective. She said no, so he asked her to see can she can find witnesses as the course of action to described the event in the factual claim.
Remoteness refers to the legal test of causation which is used when determining types of loss caused by a breach of contract or duty which can be compensated by the award of damages. There is a difference between legal causation and factual causation because of that question arises whether damages resulted from breach of contract or duty. In contract law Hadley v Baxendale is the traditional test for remoteness.Test is in essence a test of forseeabilty. The loss is only recoverable if it was in contemplation of parties.English Law relating to remoteness of damages in contracts is no more vague as it was a century back when the Hadley test was nothing but words twisted around. Hol has changed its shift in approach which is more subjective now in terms of intention of parties..It can be suggested that agreement based approach to remoteness could be possibly be extended to non pecuniary losses and certain areas of law of torts.. Purpose of contractual damages under english law is to protect the innocent party and put it in a position where it would have been if the contract had not been breached. In order to prove its damages a party must show that the law was reasonably foreseeable at time of completion of contract. Parties are supposed to have certain knowledge when they enter contract and such knowledge which reasonable person is assumed to know in the ordinary course of thing. Parties are taken to foresee loss which is not likely to happen because of breach of contract
Reflective Essay On Creative Writing
Learning to Create English 283 is a creative writing class. The class I took was taught by the well–respected Dr. Stewart. She has dedicated a majority of her life to writing novels, poems and short stories. What makes her writing unique is the careful details and moment capturing scenes she constructs. Creative nonfiction is the bread and butter of writing. The stories or poems are soaking with true facts and experiences. Aiming to create a bond within our class, Week Ones assignment was to compose a letter of introduction. We as a class shared our strengths, weakness and what we expect to gain from the class. This broke the ice for our class, making our transition into small groups easier. Each week, I took baby steps towards...show more content...
Titled, 20 different ways to talk about creative nonfiction. I learned about back–story, factual vs emotional truth, narrative tension and voice. These elements that carried me through the rest of the semester. Moving into Weeks Five and Six, revision was the main focus. Revising of lines folded into the reading of sounds and Sonics. Both very important to the finalization of a creative nonfiction draft. Weeks 8–12 pushed the importance of drafts and revision strategies. Our small groups started to meet at least once every week working to develop better drafts for our final portfolio. Our creative piece should reflect our growth as a writer, using shape, structure, style, drafting and revision as tools to create our own story. Dr. Stewart left us in confidence to pick whatever subjects we wanted to write about. With all these skills learned, the most important step in creative nonfiction is the research. Most of my research derived from our class readings. I paid close attention to the writers approached there craft. Reading pieces out of writing true such as "The Role of Research" and "Under the Influence". Had a huge impact on my learning. I began to understand the flow and how to examine what I wanted to write about deeper. Without the influence of research, catching the reader's emotional, imaginative and intellectual attention is extremely difficult. Having the correct structure and research combination in
Factual Basis : Global Inequality
Kiara Marmolejos
Factual Basis
Global inequality is one of today's most prevalent issues with 40% of the world's population living in poverty. Poverty is qualitatively defined as being extremely poor. It is quantitatively defined as living under $2.00 each day by the United Nations. One–sixth of the world population or 877 million people live in extreme poverty defined as living under $1.00 a day. This definition leaves out a large bracket of the world because living under 5$ or even 10$ a day can be considered extreme poverty. The Gini Index developed by the world bank provides a global picture of inequality by comparing per capita gross income of the world's economies and classifies countries as high income, upper middle income, lower middle income, or low income. According to the Gini index, the gap between rich and poor countries has grown in recent years and continues to widen. Although the index provides a comparison of country averages it does not take into account inequality within countries. Therefore, we can assume most of the world is actually living in poverty and many definitions or statistics on global poverty should be taken lightly because certain countries do no have means to quantify each household income. The growing global inequality affects the life chances of the world's population in many ways including hunger and malnutrition, health, education, vulnerability to climate change and access to

Stress and what causes it Stress is a very common everyday thing. People have stress so much that most of the time they don't even know how much it's affecting them. Stress can really affect your body, mind, and behavior. It is a normal response to situations that make you feel upset or threatened in a way. Stress is the body's way of change. The change can either be good or bad.
Stress affects your health without you even realizing it. Constant headaches or trouble sleeping would be something stress causes often. Stress can get bad enough to where it starts to affect your body system. Things like depression, heart attacks, diseases, rashes and a low immune system can all occur to people dealing with stress bad enough. The number of common signs and symptoms is outrageous and is depressing to see that there are so many people dealing with this and how it's such a common thing in this world. On stress.org, they talk about the different body systems and how they're affected. The nervous, musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, gastro and reproductive systems are all affected in some way and in many ways to say the least. If your stress ever gets so bad, I consider seeing a doctor or specialist seeing how dangerous this can get. There are four different kinds of stress warnings; Cognitive, Emotional, Physical, and Behavioral symptoms. These all range from moodiness, depression, worrying, aches/pains, and nervous habits. This can all be caused by other medical problems too so make sure you go get checked to find out what's causing it fully. People can deal with stress like its apart of their life and some can't deal at all. The way certain people handle stress can depend on your outlook on life or the decisions you make. Mostly if you have a lot to do or a lot of responsibly, your body has its emergency stress response on most of the time. Long term stress leads to depression over anything though. Overall, stress affects everyone in different

Child Development Case Study Essay
One precious little girl, charming responses, and thirty well spent minutes adds up to a successful Piaget project. The time spent on interviewing a child for cognitive development was insightful, and gave me a first hand look at how a child's mind matures with age.
N.G., 4 years, 11 months, embodied all I could ask for in a child to conduct such an interview on. Nearing her fifth birthday in the upcoming week, her age is central between ages three and seven, providing me with information that is certainly conducive to our study. Within moments upon entry into our interview it was apparent that my child fell into the preoperational stage of Piaget's cognitive development. More specifically, N.G. fell into the second half of the...show more content...
stated that the tall glass held more water because, "it's bigger!" This is a classic example validating no conservation; the ability to recognize the important properties of a substance or object that remain constant despite changes in its shape. A branch of conservation is the logical concept of complementarily, which better argues N.G.'s lack of conservation. Complementarily deals with one tall, narrow glass, and another short, wide glass which is a spitting image of our demonstration.
Entering part two of my interview I was observing for egocentric tendencies which were surprisingly nowhere to be found. I led into this section by telling N.G., "My birthday was yesterday!" Hoping to have a response of, "My birthday's in six days!" was nonexistent, instead N.G.'s response was, "that's cool". Short and simple, N.G. neither showed signs of egocentrism or an understanding of how I should feel by responding with a neutral response. Part three, the questioning section of my interview, solidified my analysis of N.G.'s cognitive functioning. N.G. was asked numerous questions, six specifically, that were to differentiate her recognition of factual and imaginary information. Over the course of the questioning I received a variety of answers that showed no correlation between one another. N.G. was able to logically respond to the following questions:

empiricism Essay
Empiricism
Empiricism by nature is the belief that there is no knowledge without experience. How can one know what something tastes like if they have never tasted it? For example, would someone know that an apple is red if they have never actually have seen one. Someone can tell you an apple is red, but, if you never have seen one, can you really be sure?
Empiricists use three anchor points in which they derive their opinions from. The first of these points is; the only source of genuine knowledge is sense experience. An easier way to understand this is to compare the mind to a clean sponge. As the sponge touches things, it takes with it, a piece of everything it touches. Without this, the sponge would remain clean and be void of anything...show more content...
Another of the classic empiricists is George Berkeley (1685–1753), who believes that knowledge is possible. He believed that "it was only through experience and not reason that we have knowledge of reality" (p.99). The best way to describe what Berkeley was trying to say would be found in what we call today idealism. Idealism by definition is a position that maintains that ultimate reality is mental or spiritual in nature. He believed that reality is made up in many individual minds rather than one cosmic mind. Hence, when Berkeley says that we have an idea of something he is not necessarily referring to a particular concept but to the experience of our memory of the combined ideas.
The third empiricist is David Hume (1711–1776) and he does not answer this question as easily as the first two have. He believes that knowledge is possible but is limited by what we cannot know about the world outside of our own experience. Since we can only know the contents of our individual minds, knowledge would and can be different for each person. Hume believes that sensory data is key for any individual in order to know something is real. For example, if two people were sitting together, one possessing the ability to see and hear and the other does not, could the one the latter really know that a car drove by and that fact that it was red? Examples like this one are why Hume

Above all, poetry involves aspects of language that appeal to, and communicate by sound and sight.
In literary text the meaning is linked to the purpose, and it means that the character in the poem is fed up with boredom, loneliness and social isolation. In contrast, the meaning which is linked to the purpose of the article in the newspaper has to do with the wave of knife crime among the youth in United Kingdom. Articles and poems always have meanings for their readers.
A poem and an article share similarities when it comes to the choice, use of stock of words in a language and order of words in a sentence. Authors and/or narrators make correct choice of words from in a language and arrange them properly in sentences to express clearly the intended meaning. Writers' aim is to get the readers' attention, so syntax and lexis are manner of speaking when used properly in literature. However, Poetry is often a fluid and personal passion without the necessary need to adhere to certain grammar rules or stanza styles.
The structure, as seen in the article is more pronounced in that; a good title is created, an introduction that outlined the main features of the subject and described how the subject is all about was explained in a clear way. It had a conclusion. However, the poem has no beginning, middle and ending. Poetry differs in visual form from articles. It has been noticed that the
Reflection Essay : What I Have Learned In Physics
What did I learn in physics this year? Physics reveals how our surroundings operate or don't operate. I learned how a microwave oven uses rays with a smaller wavelength than a lightbulb. One thing I learned about physics is that it's all based on math. Having a math disability puts me at a disadvantage against all other students. I understand material better especially if the lesson is taught to me one–on–one and I also don't have a very good memory which doesn't allow me to remember material as fast and easier as others. Let me start off with I know about physics. What I have learned about physics is that this subject is the study of the physical properties that surround us. Physics is how things move and what makes them move. For example, measurements such as velocity and acceleration and how they are used in physics is a major piece of the class. Also, physicists study the forces of gravity, electrical currents, and other numerous forces that hold everything together. Physics is also the study of very large things and very small things. Scientists study the stars, planets, and all other galaxies made up of matter. They also study the smaller pieces of matter such as atoms and electrons. During this year, I have learned the study of sound, light, and waves. We also studied the energy, heat, and radioactivity amongst objects. Physics not only helps us understand how objects move, but also how they change form, go from hot to cold, and what they are made of. One example of what we learned this year is the motion of an object. Motion can be portrayed as using displacement, distance, velocity, acceleration, time, and speed. We had focused on the lesson of Newton's first law: an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an outside force.
Physics is all about ideas, all about how the universe works and its hidden properties. These ideas help you predict what will happen with matter and its energy to move and change. You do have to make measurements and you do have to use mathematical equations to find your final answer and what will happen. Somebody with a good understanding of physics has an idea of how a car will
Analysis Of The Poem ' Cannibals '
In 1516 Sir Thomas More published Utopia, a book that describes in vivid detail the structure that is necessary for a community to live free of greed, self–interest, and violence. In it, he concocts a hypothetical and virtuous city–state that is very organized with rules governing leadership, division of labor, and private property. In 1580, sixty–four years after More's publication, Michel Eyquem De Montaigne published Of Cannibals. Of Cannibals is a factual essay that describes a society living in 'Antarctic France'. A captivating aspect of Montaigne's essay is how it presents a real society that has the critical elements that More stated were necessary for a utopian society. Montaigne's society highly reveres valor and virtue and has customs that govern the figureheads of society, division of labor, and private property. A shocking element that separates Montaigne's society from More's is the fact that the inhabitants of Antarctic France practice cannibalism. The primary reason that Montaigne focuses on cannibalism is to emphasize the degree to which valor and virtue is venerated by the inhabitants of Antarctic France. The two societies, one hypothetical and one factual both state similar requirements that are necessary for a society's populace to cooperate; however, More's focus is lack of private property ownership, while Montaigne's is valor and virtue. Utopia by Sir Thomas More and Of Cannibals by Michel Eyquem De Montaigne assert in varying degrees that the elements
"A factor, by itself, may not be sufficient to cause injury but if, with other factors, it materially contributes to causing injury, it is clearly a cause of injury.". This quote, stated by Lord Salmon in McGhee v National Coal Board is an example of the difficulty that can arise when determining if a defendant had materially contributed to the plaintiff 's injury when the medical evidence is inconclusive. It is argued that the material contribution test has changed the path of the law and as we will see when analysing both McGhee and Fairchild, it has blurred the distinction between legal and factual causation.
In part 1 of this essay, we will examine the difference between factual causation and legal causation. In part 2, we will examine the judgements in both cases and how the courts applied the material contribution test to both. In part 3, our analytical section, we will examine how both of these cases have blurred the distinction between legal and factual causation and argue that the material contribution test has changed the path of the law for future cases.
Legal Causation
In this section, we will look at cause–in–fact and legal causation and how they are both traditionally understood.Legal causation involves the use of legal principles to attribute responsibility to the factual causes of an injury and it is particularly helpful in resolving more complex types of cases. The legal decision as to what is the cause involves a judgement as to where responsibility
Descriptive Essay On Dystopia
Dystopian Setting
The city that once had homed thousands and been the most economically successful country ever, was now a contaminated wasteland. The land looked dry, destroyed and lonely. The morning breeze felt like crying sorrows, and the grey deceitful sky awed down at us. In the deepest corner of despair lies dystopia where hope dies. As someone looks through the eyes of the devil, they see his utopia. Only visible by the dim light of the moon was the great wall. Beyond the wall? No one knew. Stretching away from the wall was a humongous bridge that towered the wall. Standing tall on the bridge was a tower, which had two circles that almost looked like eyes. Those mysterious, creepy and dangerous looking eyes stared down at the city giving away a haunting look.
The reek of death hangs in the air throughout the land. Filling the mouths of those who lived in this abandoned land was the taste of burnt garlic. Aggressively, the wind walked past the building with its cruddy feeling, blowing away all signs of life. Deeper and deeper into the land was a burning car door. The fire roared and crackled. The roaring and crackling of the burning car door merged with the aggressive air and created the loudest sounds ever heard on land. Growing darker, the skies made me feel nauseous. The fear of not waking up if a human fell asleep towered

Heaven help you if you do anything to endanger her family. My mom also does not go soft on her kids; she can be a formidable disciplinarian when she wants to and will not hesitate to set us straight when we broke the rules. She won't let anybody walk over her and is really quick to anger if you try. My mother is strong–willed and stubborn; when she sets her mind to something almost nothing will stop her and what an impossible feat it is to change her mind on something. She is very impatient; when she wants something done she wants it done at this very moment, no later. She is idealistic and she enjoys the simpler things that life has to offer. She loves nature and would love nothing more than to be living in a cabin in the mountains while listening to country music. She does not pay much attention to news happening outside her local area and prefers to focus on what's happening in her immediate area. From my mother I have learned how to be the person that I am today. Through her I have learned the importance of family and that it is paramount to spend time with them while I still have it. Even now I try to spend time with my family when I have the opportunity to. Form her I have learned compassion for those around me and for animals. Even
Reflection Paper On Ted Talk
For this assignment, I chose to watch a Ted Talk that focused on the importance of understanding differences. It is entitled Love No Matter What and is the culmination of years of research done by Andrew Solomon. I chose this Ted Talk because I thought it would be interesting to hear about different lived experiences that people have endured. One of the huge ideas I have learned throughout this leadership course and all our topics and conversation is that we all have different lived experiences. It is our lived experiences that make us special and individual. Love No Matter What focused on this essential idea and how important differences are. The topic of this Ted Talk completely reflects what has been said in our leadership class as well as what I think a student leader at Western Oregon University should be. Solomon's talk is centered around the relationship of parents and children and accepting and loving children, but the ideas expressed in his talk can be applied to any human relationship. I believe Western is a university that deeply prides itself in its student diversity and acceptedness of said diversity. The Western that I know, and love, understands the true necessity of diversity and wishes to be accepting of diversity in all of its forms. To me, listening to this Ted Talk was very emotional and personal. I have been incredible blessed with parents in my life that love and accept me the way I am. However, I have not, or at least not much, challenged them in
