Civil War Narrative

The Civil War was all the Northern States' fault. The "issue" of slavery should not have bothered them in the first place. If someone had a problem with slavery the solution was simple: don't own slaves. Instead, they tried meddling with slavery which lead to the Southern States' secession and eventually, the Civil War. In my opinion, I think it all began with these new territories acquired from the Mexican–American war. The Northern States refused to allow slavery to enter this new land. Southern States, of course, wanted slavery. This was some great land. What better way to use it than by growing more crops? Agriculture is great for everyone: it gets people fed and clothed, and it helps the Union's growing economy. So, how would you...show more content...
There was all this paper money floating around everywhere and it was basically worthless. There was 9000% inflation. I was barely selling cotton now. People just could not afford it. Not even Europe was buying cotton from us. In all honesty, I was not very good at keeping up with the war. Since I was not fighting in the war, I did not hear about many battles. Through the grapevine, I was able to hear about some of the major battles, especially the Confederate victories. It seemed like in the east, the Confederacy would always come out victorious: The First Manassas, The Seven Days' Battles, The Second Manassas, the Battle of Fredericksburg; in the west, the Union beat us: Shiloh, New Orleans. I almost thought the Confederacy had this war in the bag: "We're going to win this!," I would hear a lot of people say. But, there was one battle everyone heard about: the Battle of Sharpsburg in September of 1862, or the Battle of Antietam, as the Northerners like to call it. Supposedly it was the bloodiest battle in the entire war. It was a Union victory. Though I was not there, this battle changed my life. This single battle led to Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. This law banned slavery. I lost all of my slaves. At this point, I thought "We already lost." The whole point of us fighting this war was to maintain our rights and independence from the Union. They had just removed our right to own property. Yet, the war was nowhere near over.

Civil War Research Paper
The effects of the Civil War brought about changes in the United States. The country had to answer the question: To what level of moral and ethical conduct do we want Americans to be held? Loyalties were seriously evaluated. People had to decide if they held their loyalty to the country as a whole, their state, their families, or even to humanity as a whole. They had to decide if it was right to own another person, or if the slavery system was justified as a way to keep the Southern economy going. Through all this contemplation, people wrote about their thoughts and fears, and as a result, people abandoned romanticism and became realists. Many writings of the Civil War, whether informational or literary, reflect...show more content...
Ambrose uses realism in his writings by giving vivid details of the thoughts of this civilian who is caught by the Union soldiers and is about to be hanged. "Death is a dignitary who when he comes announced is to be received with formal manifestations of respect, even by those most familiar with him" (457). This shows us how a man's loyalties can affect him greatly, especially when he chooses a path that can ultimately lead to death.
The Civil War was not only a bloody war, but it also made people question humanity itself. Is it right or wrong to own another human being? Many writers would write of the anarchy and despair that ensued during the Civil War. With a realistic style, the details of this struggle for humanity were clear in the writings of this time period.
Abraham Lincoln addressed the people of the United States in his writing "The Gettysburg Address." Lincoln's speech addresses how our nation dealt with the struggle of equality and humanity. Lincoln's strong ideas and beliefs on humanity are shown in his speech: "It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us–that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion" (503).

After about 20 minutes of riding in that not saying single word because everybody was scared out of their mind, well at least I know I was. After the bus had stopped I started to get off then filed in to groups on the sides of the company buildings. They told everybody to open their bags and dump everything out while one of the drill sergeants pulled out a paper with a list of items on it. If 1 person out of the whole company was missing anything on that list we all got punished for it so you can understand me being at everybody's throat
Julius Caesar And The Civil War Essay
![](/example-foto/essay-civil-war.png)
The Civil War, consisting in large part of Caesar's own account of the conflict between himself and Pompey, explores the origins of the war, the manner in which it was carried out, and most importantly the role of pivotal figures on both sides of the struggle. Prior to his records ending and supplementation by military officers, Caesar makes a case for his involvement in and perhaps triggering of the war, one which would transform the social and political landscape of the Roman empire as battles and campaigns were waged from Spain to Italy, Africa to Asia Minor. Caesar walks a fine line between historian, strategist and orator as he attempts to record historical events, martial decisions, and persuade an audience respectively. Despite his efforts to remain impartial, as evidenced by his admission that "the Pompeians were winning" at Dyrrachium, Caesar consistently presents himself as a charismatic and skilled general and leader, jeopardizing the integrity of the text as objective material and allowing it to be a propagandist account of sorts. Ultimately, Caesar uses anecdotal evidence, the presentation of his personal thoughts, and juxtaposition with his opposition to paint his side of the war in a positive and just light. When reading The Civil War, it is critical to understand what Julius Caesar was attempting to accomplish by recording a narrative of his war, on and off the battlefield, with Pompey and his forces. Every author creates their work with bias, be it

The Union will win this battle and make America survive and claim independence and equality for all, but in doing so our strong soldiers have to participate in long hours of drill, often insufficient food or shelter, disease and many days in the hot dusty roads. It is a piece of canvas buttoned to another to form a small two– man tent and sometimes our soldiers would not have anywhere to sleep because the Confederates capture their tents. These army camps looks like a city of white canvas that are usually covered by smoke. The soldiers construct log huts that are large enough to fit several men, which are made by trees. Also, Marching and fighting drills is a huge part of the soldiers routine. Each man gets orders and formations like marching in column and they practice guard mount and other procedures to learn for the rifle musket.
In addition, drums were used to announce daily activities. The drum is played to wake up the soldiers at 5 AM followed by an assembly for breakfast and I have seen that sometimes it is used to give signals to load and fire their weapons. The English Civil War
The English Civil War was a complicated, intellectual war between the two most powerful forces in England: Parliament and the King. Conflicts between the two powers began when King Charles I dissolved Parliament in 1625 because they would not give him the money he demanded to fund his war against Spain. Parliament, who was lead by John Pym, felt that the King was showing favouritism towards the Roman Catholics, especially since Charles had recently married the Roman Catholic French Princess. Although Charles recalled Parliament in 1626, he proceeded to dissolve the second Parliament mainly because it attempted to impeach him. While there were minor reforms to the system, the people, the Church and the Monarchy of England went back to living their lives relatively the same as they had before the start of the English Civil War. Violence during the English Civil war effected hundreds of thousands of English civilians. However, "while violence killed thousands of people...the impact of the war – as a war – was surprisingly limited." Casualties during the war were high: 190 000 people died in England and 868 000, or 11.6% of the population, perished within the British Isles. This number was only a third of the amount of people who died in England during the great plague of 1570 – 1670. King Charles II was content with putting things aside and starting over again, and it seemed like the people of England were too. Although women and children lost husbands and fathers, their loses were quickly replaced by new husbands or relatives to help out. By the end of the war, most people simply wanted to get on with their lives since there was nothing that they could about the people they lost during the war. Many people forgot their differences and were found even marrying across the barriers which were created during the war. Damaged property was quickly repaired since it created jobs for civilians looking for work. Buildings were destroyed, but since the war was not as explosive
Argumentative Essay About Civil War

Topic: Civil War The Civil War was fought in America from 1861 to 1865. Many people refer to this war as "The War Between the States." Tensions were high between states before the war officially started. During the period of time preceding the war, people were arguing with each other and most hated each other. The reason they were fighting was mainly over the issue of slavery and what rights a state had. Since there were only eleven states when this happened, the problems they were faced with divided all of them. These issues often came up in the presidential debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas. Abraham Lincoln and the North believed that all slavery should end, while Stephen A. Douglas and the South thought that every state had a right to choose if they wanted slavery or not. By the time the Civil War started, people were as furious as they possibly could be at each other. The war officially started when Southern troops attacked Fort Sumter, South Carolina. When the battles started, the Northern states and Southern states were both fighting for what they believed to be right. Although the North had more men and supplies than the South, it was still a hard fought battle. Countless people died during this war and, the most gruesome battle was the Battle of Gettysburg. The war itself is not considered quite controversial, but the issues of it are and there are many reasons as to why. Multiple people think of slavery when they think of the Civil War. It
Causes and Effects of the Civil War Essay

Did you know America's bloodiest battle fought on their own soil was the Civil War? The Civil War was fought on American soil between the northern states and the southern states. Many causes provoked the war, which would affect the nation for decades to come. Slavery, the Missouri Compromise, and John Brown's attack on Harpers Ferry, Virginia, were some of the many causes. In turn hundreds of thousands of soldiers died, the South's economy was devastated, and the northern ideals flourished.
In the later 1700's to 1863, slavery was an intricate part of the South. Slaves were needed for plantation work like planting, caring for, and harvesting crops to maintaining the land. After...show more content...
The Missouri Compromise stated Missouri would be a slave state and Maine would be carved out of Massachusetts and created into a non–slave state. The Missouri Compromise really angered the North, contributing to the Civil War.
In May of 1856, Congressman Preston Brooks of South Carolina entered the nearly empty senate chamber and beat Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner with a cane. Brooks felt violated by Sumner's "Crime Against Kansas" speech, which provoked the retaliation. This attack spread the idea that violence might be able to solve the problem of slavery. In October 1859, abolitionist John Brown, led a violent attack. He and his band of 21 men and attacked the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. They hoped to spark a slave rebellion that would end slavery, and in John Brown's words, "purge this land with blood." Brown's attack was one of the final causes that sparked the Civil War.
When the Civil War finally concluded, thousands of American soldiers died fighting for what they believed in. The Confederate army lost a total of 258,000 soldiers and the Union army lost 360,000 soldiers. The loss of so many people immensely harmed the nation mentally and economically. Almost everybody had a family, relative, or friend that died in the Civil War. Half of the lives lost were farmers in the South, which devastated the South's economy because these farmers were also consumers for their

The Civil War, known by many as one of the most tumultuous times in our country's history is one of the most crucial wars that the United States has ever participated in. The reason for this is that the country was not at war with an enemy from another country but within itself. With the many years of conflict between the northern union states and the southern confederacy states and with the Union's victory over the confederate south, it has been known as one of the most infamous wars of
United States History. This war also proclaimed the crucial significance of six presidents from states that represented both the Union and Confederacy and the effect their political pursuits had on the Civil War. These Presidents were Abraham Lincoln, Martin...show more content...

The final president, but not the least known, is Mr. Penny himself, Abraham
Lincoln. Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States. He was the President who ended the Civil War on May 9, 1865. Abe Lincoln was a very trusted, intelligent, and self–taught kid; through self–teaching, Lincoln even became a lawyer. As president of the Union, Lincoln had to lead the North in order to defeat the Southern Confederacy.
On January 1, 1863, Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation after the Union's

As the United States began to establish itself as a country, more and more problems began to surface within the nation. A perfect example of this would be the American Civil War, which significantly affected society. This brought about many changes within America such as women's rights movements and decisions regarding African American freedom. Also many of the problems are country had previously left unresolved were soon to be resolved too. They elected their own president, and eventually the Civil War as the United States knows it started. (Davis 143–145)
After about four years of fighting, the Civil War finally ended in about 1865. Although the Northern states won, there were many predicaments still unsettled. Even though Abraham Lincoln had freed the slaves in the North, the Confederate States were still getting by with slavery. Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation of Proclamation had a dramatic impact on the lives of African American slaves throughout the United States. As Frederick Douglass says in The Civil War: Opposing Viewpoints, "But read the proclamation for it is the most important of any to which the president of the United States has signed his name," (Dudley 181). Just by demanding that all slavery be abolished in certain areas, this considerably changed the ways of the African American people. With this new feeling of freedom, many African Americans began to fight for other rights to accompany this. (Dudley 180–183)
No longer having to provide slave work for whites, the African Americans began to become more knowledgeable about the privileges that they would be able to have. They began to fight for the right to vote and the right to land. Among fighting for specific civil liberties such as those, African Americans also fought for equality between both races. Without the drive of these forerunners in the fight for equality, many slaves would not have the

Police would brutally beat black Americans. The black American's rights and their well being were targeted by society. (The case for Reparations 2015) The government provided limited help as they took a blind eye only to focus on the economy instead of the conditions that were happening in the south (Painter 151). We can still see how police and government still lean one–sided in today's age. In this current event, in particular, they spoke of taking legal actions for the hate crime but no further actions were actually put into place. We can see how

The United States War against Mexico was an armed conflict between the United States and Mexico from 1846 to 1848 about the U.S. annexation of Texas, which Mexico still considered part of their territory. American forces occupied New Mexico and California, and then invaded parts of Northeastern and Northwestern Mexico. Another American army captured Mexico City, which ended the war with a U.S victory. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo specified the major consequence of the war: the forced Mexican Cession of the territories of Alta California and New Mexico to the U.S. in exchange for $15 million. Mexico accepted the loss of Texas. American territorial expansion to the Pacific coast had been the goal of President James K. Polk, the leader of the Democratic Party. However, the war was extremely controversial with the Whig Party, anti–imperialists and anti–slavery elements, who all strongly opposed. Several American deaths and high monetary costs were also criticized. The political aftermath of the war increased the slavery issue in the U.S., leading to intense debates that pointed toward the Civil War. The Compromise of 1850 provided a brief relief for the U.S. The Compromise of 1850 was a consisted of five bills passed in the United States in September of 1850. In 1861, a lawyer from Illinois was the new President and states were seceding quickly in the belief that this new president would support the abolishment of slavery and, therefore, the disestablishment of southern states' rights. A war fought between brothers, fathers, sons, and cousins destroyed the American union at a pivotal time in American history. With the shots fired at Fort Sumter, a war would begin that would not only change the course of history but would reconstruct the nation into an almost unrecognizable form.

The South was unable to stop the uproar of citizens with the revelations of the inhumanity of many slave owners uncovered by the novel. This led to an uproar of those seeking moral standards and, as a result, the election of an anti–slavery President.
In 1861, Abraham Lincoln was elected to the Presidency by only those in the North, as the South refused to vote for him, believing his victory would mean the dissolution of their way of life. The South realized that they no longer had political control if Lincoln was elected. Lincoln claimed slavery was a "moral evil" but did not believe in the immediate abolishment of slavery. Instead, he believed those already slaves should remain slaves and those free blacks should return to colonize Africa. Shortly after he took office, Lincoln saw the disbandment of the Union as South Carolina and, eventually, ten other states, seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America, led by Jefferson Davis.
Both the North and the South recruited veteran generals who had graduated from the United States Military Academy, which eventually led to the stalemate that lasted for about a year. The generals had been trained in the same maneuvers while being educated in warfare. Robert E Lee was given the chance to lead the Union troops and while he saw the Union as

p. 505). Although the nation before Abraham Lincoln's presidential win was lawfully united, its mixture of slave states, non–slave states, and the new territories with undeclared laws on slavery was filled with tension.
As far back as 84 years before the war, legal changes to slavery were already beginning to occur in the Northern states. From 1777 to 1804, majority of the north adapted one of three lawful ways of freeing slaves. Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts chose to abolish slavery all together. While New York, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey opted for the gradual emancipation, the states on the south of their borders chose something else. In Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware, where slaves were still a vital part of their workforce, only individual cases of emancipation were granted to some. (Roark et al., p. 259) At around the same time in 1793, the Southern states were introduced to a new invention that successfully altered their whole economy. The creation of Eli Whitney's cotton gin made production of cotton easier and faster. This in turn, enabled the owners of the machine the ability to cater to the high demands of cotton worldwide. Unfortunately for the slaves in the South, cotton gins still required operation by an actual person, and the cotton gins was only used for one step (although separating the seeds from the cotton was the most difficult) out of the many steps

In 1776, the Civil War began. Most believe war started over the moral issue of slavery, which was a huge conflict in society but in fact it started over the economic standpoint of slavery and political control. A key issue though, was states rights. The South wanted authority over the federal government so they could abolish federal laws that they didn't support. Territorial expansion was another factor in the breakout of the Civil War. The South wanted slavery in the Western territories while the North was committed to being against slavery. While this was going on, a republican party was forming with members who were strongly against westward expansion of slavery, basically taking the North's side. In 1860 when Abraham Lincoln took office, it was made clear to the South that slavery was not going to expand westward. Therefore, the seven states in the South seceded from the Union forming the Confederate States of America, leading to the start of the Civil War. April 12th, 1861 a battle broke out at Fort...show more content...
A lasting effect of the war was the emancipation of the slaves. It was inevitable that the North was going to win for a number of reasons. To start off, the North had a demographic advantage over the South. Since there were more civilians in the North than there were in the South, their army was always larger. The Confederacy didn't even have a great Navy. Without a strong Navy, the Confederacy would never be able to really hurt the Union by disrupting it's economy and blockading its ports. Also, most of the battles took place on Northern territories so they knew the land. In 1862, the North had captured New Orleans as well. This is important because New Orleans was the major port for the Confederacy. So to capture it, meant that the South's economy was going to collapse soon

During the American Civil War, which lasted from 1861–1865, over 620,000 accounted soldiers were killed. Known as the "the first modern war", historians generally agree that the reason for this was because this was a time of transition for the military. Armies and Navies were still using tactics where they would gather large forces of firepower to bear on the enemy. At the same time, weapons were being developed which were accurate and lethal well beyond any arms of the earlier conflicts. As a result of these two conditions many more casualties were sustained. Add to that the lack of medical knowledge of disease and infection and the numbers truly began to grow. This paper is an overview of the types of weaponry that...show more content...
Fuses could be either timed so the round would explode after a certain number of seconds had elapsed, or were percussion so the ammunition would explode upon striking an object. Shells were generally used as long range rounds, meant to explode among an advancing enemy or used to blow apart enemy forts.
Solid shot was a kinetic energy round. Its speed and mass were used to penetrate walls, fort and armor. To produce any type of casualty effect, the round would have to actually strike the target. Solid shot was particularly used against ironclad ships where a shell would do little or no damage. During one test an 8 inch Brooke rifle with 16 pounds of powder fired a 140 pound ball 260 yards and penetrated eight inches of iron backed by 18 inches of solid wood.
While there are many accounts of troops charging bravely into a "hail of grape" there is little fact in this. Grape shot was used very little on the land battlefield during the Civil War. The ammunition encountered by the soldiers was called canister, one of the war’s most deadliest rounds. Canister was basically a tin packed with sawdust and musket balls which, when fired, spread out and turned the artillery piece into a giant shotgun. At close range against masses infantry this round was devastating, cutting huge swaths through the

What Led Up To The Civil War
![](/example-foto/essay-civil-war.png)
The American Civil War was arguably the most important war in the history of the country. The War of Independence may have allowed American to become its' own country, but the Civil War resulted in something even more important than that, the end of slavery in the southern states. All of the issues that caused the Civil war were based around slavery, such as states' rights that involved how slavery would be handled in each state, and trying to preserve the Union since the south seceded from the north due to their lust for slavery. The war ended up being the deadliest in the history of the country with over 700,000 people being killed as a result of battle or from diseases that were obtained during the war. The north was better prepared for the war than the south due to various reasons. One was the fact that the north was industrialized, while the south largely relied on agriculture. Being so heavily industrialized, the north was better equipped to fight the war since they could construct better guns, cannons or even ships to create blockades to prevent the south from getting help from other countries and not everyone in the south was supportive of the war. The north also had a much larger population than the south, and since African Americans were allowed to fight for the Union, their army was larger. Arguably the most important aspect of the northern victory was that it had superior leadership in the form of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln is widely held as one of the greatest
