Child Labor Essay
Child Labor
Child Labor, refers to the economically active population under the age of fifteen years old, who are employed in various industries (Grootaert, 2). Recently, child labor has become a large topic of debate; however, in most cases, it is very unfavorable. The perception that globalization is leading towards the exploitation of children, is becoming an important problem for international business. In my opinion, child labor should be eradicated. It is not only harmful to the health of children, but it takes away their chance for an education, and simply takes away their childhood.

They share the same burden of financial responsibility as their parents; and therefore face a great deal of physical and emotional stress at an early age.
There are many points that oppose child labor; and yet, in some countries, there seems to be no choice. Children, who become orphans after losing their parents at an early age and have no relatives to support them, have no choice but to work. In developing countries, such as Asia and Africa, there are very few programs that support orphans, due to lack of resources (Grootaert, 7). Parents, living in poverty, sometimes have no other choice but to send their child to work for income.
Around the world, there are many organizations trying to eliminate child labor, by promoting policies that heavily tax goods created by child laborers, or by persuading people not to buy products made by children. The premise is good, and it can work; however, it can also aggravate the situation, because it can leave a child jobless with no way of earning money to survive.
Regardless, child labor is widespread (Buckley, 1). Many multinational companies, such as Nike and Wal–Mart have been accused of indirectly using child labor to manufacture some of their products. American and European automobile manufacturers have subsidiaries in Brazil, who use child labor, as well. Nike will be used here as the primary example. This

Of these, 120 million children are working full time to help support their families. Of those, 171 million work in hazardous conditions, such as working in mines, working with chemicals and working with dangerous machinery. Most of these workers are in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Sub–Saharan
Africa. There are 153 million of child laborers in Asia, 80 million in Africa and 17.5 million in Latin America. Sub–Saharan Africa has an estimated 48 million child workers.
Approximately 2.5 million children are working in industrialized and transition economies. Child labor is also reported in Italy, Portugal, UK, US and Eastern Europe.
The Children's Rights Division at Human Watch says that children who work long hours in dangerous and unhealthy conditions, are exposed to lasting physical and psychological harm. The Children's Rights Division gave some examples of work that children are harmed from. Working at rug looms, has left children disabled with eye damage, lung disease and stunted growth. Children making silk thread in India dip their hands into boiling water that burns and blisters them, breath smoke and fumes from machinery and medical care if often not available. There is also bonded labor, which takes place when a family hand over their child to an employer for an advance payment. In most cases the child can't work off the debt, and neither can the family raise

Child labor is considered as a form of child abuse, it being the exploitation of a child's rights and freedoms. Therefore, child labour is when underage children are employed, this happens because a child labourer is paid less than an adult labourer. Consequently employers have more children working for them because they spend less paying the children.
"Child labor usually means work that is done by children under the age of 15 (14 in some developing countries) that restricts or damages a child's physical, emotional, social and/or spiritual growth."1

Although there are efforts to put an end to child labour in the world of today, they does not seem to be enough. This is because even though there is a decrease in the number of children that experience child labour, the change is not significant. The level of child labour continues to increase. Presumably, in the societies where child labour is the way of life, only few individuals master the courage to speak against it. Unfortunately, their voices are unheard. For instance, in India there are efforts to lessen the number of child labourers, but culture always gets in the way. This results in children working under very poor conditions that pose a danger to their health on short–term and long–term scale. However, in Canada the law states that:
"Section 72 imposes a statutory duty on every person to report certain suspicions are based, to a children's aid society."2
"... a professional has a legal obligation to immediately report suspected child abuse."3
Usually, there is a reason behind everything that occurs in the world. For instance, the purpose of going to school is to educate ourselves so that we can have a bright future ahead of us. The main cause of child labour is poverty, which is heavily inclined by culture which varies with different societies. In India, culture is the way of life. Closely related to customs, culture this merely provides guidelines to the people within a society on how to conduct their daily lives.

What are the causes of child labour in India? How do governmental policies affect it? What role does education play in regard to child labour in India? A critical analysis of the answers to these questions may lead in the direction of a possible solution. These questions will be answered through an analysis of the problem of child labour as it is now, investigating how prevalent it is and what types of child labour exist. Powering a Generation of Change
The use of children in an industry is considered inhumane and perilous. Child labor is a phenomenon as old as mankind. Around the world and in the United States, growing gaps between rich and poor in at least in the 20 years forced millions of young children out of school and into work. Underage children work at all kinds of jobs around the world, usually because they and their families are very poor. Large numbers of children work in commercial farming, fishing, manufacturing, mining, and domestic service. Some children work in illegal activities like the drug trade and prostitution or other terrible and upsetting activities such as serving as soldiers ([www.michaelherringdesign.com] 2011). Child labor should be banned when negatively affecting the child's health and development.
Of an estimated 215 child laborers around the globe: approximately 114 million (53%) are in Asia and the Pacific; 14 million (7%) live in Latin America; and 65 million (30%) live in sub–Saharan Africa ([www.michaelherringdesign.com] 2011). Child labor can be found in every industry. Children have been found gathering bananas in Ecuador, oranges in Brazil, cotton in Egypt and Russia and many other items. In commercial farming, children are more likely to breathe in unpleasantly bug–killing chemicals and be exposed in extreme temperatures for long periods of time. They often have inadequate food, water, and sanitation. ([www.michaelherringdesign.com] 2011).
Underage children are often found in manufacturing jobs as well. Approximately 14 million children are estimated to be directly involved in manufacturing goods. Children have been found in manufacturing carpets in India, Pakistan, and Egypt. They also been involved in sewing soccer balls in Pakistan. The beautiful display of fireworks is made by children in China, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, India, and Peru ([www.michaelherringdesign.com] 2011).
In many countries, child labor is part of culture and anchored in traditional attitudes. Child laborers suffer extremely high illness and injury rates in underground mines, opencast mines, and quarries. Children as young as 6 or 7 years old break up rocks, and wash, sieve, and carry ore.

"India has the largest work force of children in the world. They are made to work as shares in fields and factories in homes and in cottage industries. They are deprived of their childhood. Children are also self–employed as shoeshine, milk boys, rag pickers and rickshaw pullers. They are overworked and under paid. They miss the benefits of education" (R. H. Waghamode, J. L. Kalyan). Many children suffer from the age of child to adulthood as they become exhausted and usually deformed from working from a child because kids work jobs from stone quarries, in the streets to working in the fields or hidden in another house that often makes them do domestic chores. Child labor in India has a common cause why they use children because it is a socioeconomic problem with India having illiteracy, poverty and other issues that fuel child labor. With the continuation of child labor, India continues to be one of the prominent country that utilizes children to work. Malaysia is another country that uses child labor, though somewhat developed, it still uses child labor but not as harsh than India. They work as labourers in workshops, at eating–places and other commercial sectors.
A great majority of the children, 77%, indicated that, at the time of the study, they have been working for less than one year, while 19.2% had been working for between one to three years. Children are also observed to work in restaurants, carrying goods, wet market works. Boys and

Child labour is one of the topic that presents strong emotions, beliefs and opinions. Most people are opposed to the involvement of children in labour force activities when they are at an age when other activities, such as education and play, should be the central role in development. However, child labour represents an extremely difficult and complex issue which often extends beyond emotions, beliefs and opinions. Much of this has to do with the understanding that a wide variety of factors, such as economic, cultural, social, political and legal concerns, are part of any child labour problems as well as the solution to these problems. However, while poverty is an important causal factor, it is often the case that it is not the only factor. For example, some studies have indicated that some child workers "...are from relatively affluent families, and engage in the business for excitement and pocket money"5. This would seem to suggest that "...cultural and economic factors here interact in complex ways to encourage child work and need to be understood together"6.
An examination of existing trends regarding child labour often reveals contradictory and even disturbing developments. More specifically, official data from most countries have shown "...a gradual, long–term decline in child labour, but many experts assert that recent economic crisis in the developing countries has led to an upsurge in juvenile workers"7. Even though child labour is primarily found in developing countries, and that this can be largely attributed to the economic, social and cultural environment, there is some indication of a resurgence in this activity in industrialized countries. Much of this activity also happens to be everywhere and familiar, such as a child who shines shoes for a living, who is at home tending younger children or who is helping in a family farm and business working such long hours that it is impossible to play or even attend school. If anything, this emphasizes that much of the attention that has been focused on

Child labor is a pervasive problem throughout the global economy, especially in the markets of developing countries. With over 90% of the total child labor market employed in the rural areas of Asia and Africa largely due to lack of enforcement, it is argued that something has to be done. Although the majority of people are ethically appalled by child labor, and against the exploitation of children, is the worldwide eradication of the worst forms of child labor really a feasible alternative? To answer this question people have to take into account a variety of factors involving both the economic and social costs, as well as have a firm understanding of the situations people are faced with in these underdeveloped...show more content...
With a vast amount of resources and huge demand for finished goods, child labor including the worst forms of bonded labor were used in both the US and UK to produce goods at the lowest possible cost. So to tell governments of impoverished nations to ban the practices that helped make industrialized nations what they are today is counterintuitive. For the US and the UK as well as others have relied on the use of child labor during their time of industrial development. This is a large reason why some third world governments are willing to turn a blind eye to some of the practices going on in their countries. Because there is hope that they too will develop industry by attracting foreign investment with the lure of cheap labor, and one day be able to emerge as an industrialized nation as did the US and the UK. So how does child labor help increase investment, and make children better off?
This is a very strong argument for the proponents of child labor. The governments of these countries understand that a child working 14 hours a day in a factory isn't what is best for that child. But when you consider the alternatives, is working in a factory for less than a dollar a day really making a child or their future worse off? Some would argue no. Primarily because of the economic advantages that can be gained by luring investment with the promise of high profits due to a cheap labor market. Child labor has been an extremely serious issue since the early industrial revolution and it continues to be an issue today. The movement towards the industrial revolution increased demand for labor, especially cheap labor, which targeted young children as a means for performing work in the factories. Since it was an economically growing era for the United States, children in the 18th century worked long hours for low minimum wage under harsh conditions to help their families. Children were easily suitable for the working conditions in the factory because of their size, and it was easy to manage them because the factories did not have to worry about paying them more as compared to adults. The act has separate rules for children working in agriculture and in non–agriculture employment. For example, the minimum age for work in non–agricultural jobs is "18 years for hazardous occupations, 16 years for employment in non–hazardous occupations, and 14 years for a limited set of occupations, with restrictions on hours and work conditions" (Donovan, & Shimabukuro, 2016). Further, there are several exclusions to the minimum age for work in agricultural jobs such as "16 years for employment in any agricultural job, including hazardous agricultural occupations, with no restrictions on hours of work, 14 years for employment in non–hazardous agricultural jobs outside of school hours, and any age for employment in non–hazardous agricultural jobs, outside of school hours, with parental consent, when certain conditions are met concerning farm size, the nature and duration of work, and other requirements" (Donovan, & Shimabukuro, 2016). Even though the labor laws have extensively eradicated child labor in the US, it nevertheless poses concerns in the agriculture area of the economy today. Further, complex and different child labor laws for agriculture workers and non–agriculture workers increases the chances of violations of the labor laws. It is important to consider the working environment for agriculture workers because children

Child Labor Hurts Everyone
In the past, women and men fought for the children of America to liberate them of the burden of harsh work and give them their childhood back. Although we want to believe that child labor is now history, child labor is still significant in our time, all around the world. Today the number of children, ages 5–14, working around the world are estimated to be increasing. Children are constantly working in dangerous working environments that cost them their lives or hamper their ability them to have a basic normal childhood that children have in America. These children miss the opportunity to run and play with friends, have friends their own age, to explore the world around them that they live in every day, have the opportunities to go to school to learn about the world they live in, and expand their imagination. Instead children in some part of world are going to mines and sweatshops to work instead of to school. They are working in dangerous places instead of playing with kids their own ages, and we in America are helping with the growth of child labor.
Although in America we have protected our next generation by out lawing child labor, we are constantly helping the growth of child labor in other parts of the world. How you might ask? By buying the products produced through child labor from other countries. As American consumers we need to stop buying products produced by child labor. The sources that I will be analyzing and will provide dates and facts to examine how we in America have increased the buying of products from other countries that have child labor as their number one workforce, how by buying from these countries has hurt Americans, how our import has increased, and exports decreased, and how this has hurt America's economy dramatically.

Child labor is not necessary if the income from adults is high enough to provide a reasonable standard of living. Almost without exception adult labor is a substitution for child labor. Child labor is often justified by an attitude that says the children are developing good habits that will make them constantly employable as adults.
Without education, the child often has no other alternative than to enter the work force while still a minor. As a handicapped, probably illiterate child, he will be sentenced to a lifetime of poverty. Access to education becomes increasingly remote. Over 125 million children are without formal schooling. One comparison points out that the cost of educating these children would be 10 billion dollars, a sizeable sum except when recognizing that this is the cost of four days of global military spending.
For child labor conditions to improve, strong workers' rights codes are necessary. Early studies emphasize this point by pointing out that child labor problems extend beyond long hours and poor pay and include highly abusive, sometimes criminal practices. Intentionally distorting and concealing where and when the children are working can further violate child labor rights. With multiple layers of production and outsourcing, it is hard to identify the degree and amount of work that is child labor. What amounted to slave labor in the 19th century was the condition that was prominent especially in

Some of the children that have been studied in India's workforce have suggest that they are not proud of themselves (23%), they are under extreme stress (55%), they are not happy (67%), they are extremely shy (64%) of the 500 children studied during 2011(Gamlin et al., 2015). This is a perfect indication of the damage these young children's brains are suffering from the impacts of the working conditions and abuse faced during their work.
Furthermore, the reason why child labour is an issue around the 'work' is because of the detrimental effects the working conditions and work has on the child's development into their real career. Children in the workforce are not being treated as children they are essentially salves. They work inhumane hours, are starved until a job is done or not fed at all, beaten and abused for being tired or not performing at their regular capacity (Srivastava, 2012). But this is okay as many workers or labour's suggest because we need their tiny hands and they are faster at getting the job done. However, their childhood is stripped from them as they miss out on going to school and forced into the labour force. These children are experiencing intense fast paced work, that they are not ready for (Gamlin et al., 2015). The children are also severally hindered in their brain development as they are being abused

Child Labour And Its Effect On Children Essay
Child labour, in the Western tradition, evokes a negative connotations of dangerous work being committed by children, and while child labour that causes physiological or psychological damage to children, or inhibits their ability to gain an education is reprehensible, not all child labour is detrimental. However, child work, which is difficult to differentiate from child labour, is an acceptable even beneficial to the child and their family. This is especially true in agriculture. However, certain industries should prohibit all children from working such as working domestically outside of the child's home or within mining. While children are working in all these industries it become a question of why. There are several reasons including: poverty, which is associated with an inability to receive an education, the cultural context of a society, family breakdown, and a lack of government enforcement and resources. In order to address the underlying causes of child labour it is imperative that implement policies that reduce and eliminate child labour, additionally there must be cultural enjoyment to better educate the populace on what the obligations the state has signed on too, also education needs to be free in its entirety to ensure everyone has equal opportunity for advancement, finally there needs to be greater government resources invested in reducing the sources of poverty. However, over the previous ten years, he found that the absolute number of children working was declining in Asia but rising in the Americas and Africa, sharply in the latter. The problem is enormous, but the trend, fortunately, is heading in the right direction. The overall growth of an economy is by no means the only factor, nor for that matter the most important factor, in the mitigation of child labor. Depending upon many variables, from economic development, to political structure, corruption, and other external factors, some families need to have their child bringing home a small amount of moneys. Therefore, the child labor phenomenon is reasonable. One important which caused child labor is the poverty. The birthrate is so high that create overpopulation and cause poverty and lack of primary education. One way that many families in traditional societies attempt to cope with the pressure of overpopulation and the resulting unemployment is to send children to urban areas to find cash employment. Sending their child out on the labor force is a way to exchange for small loans or to repay the debts of the parents or grandparents. In most Asia countries, they don't have social security for the elder, so parents often rely on their children for financial support. The children that worked there were not allowed to speak and were often beaten if the broke the rules or made mistakes. When Iqbal was 10 years old, he was severely beaten by the factory owner, a man named Arshbad, and decided to escape and report it to the police. When the police looked the other way, Iqbal was forced to return to the factory and was chained to his loom. Some time later, Iqbal escaped and went to a meeting of the Bonded Labour Liberation Front, an organization whose goal was to free Pakistan's bonded workers.
