College Admissions Essay: Who Am I?
Who Are You?
Who am I? To answer this question let us go back to my childhood. When I was eight year old a major life–changing event took place. My step–father (an American) decided that after fifteen years of living in Thailand he was ready to come home. My first year in America was a definite culture shock. I went from being an outgoing child to one of quiet and reserved; I was afraid to do anything or talk to anyone because I didn't want to embarrass myself. My English was very limited (I was just starting to learn basic English words when we left Thailand). When I was in school I always feel like my classmates were talking about me or making fun of me for being different.
Things were much better, however, by the time I was thirteen and entered middle school. I had a group of friends and I was more outgoing and more independent. My mother, sadly, was not around much while I was growing up. After moving to America she quickly realized she was not going to be able to have a career here with only a fifth grade education like she did in Thailand (she was and accountant for a furniture company there). She threw herself into learning English and attending GED classes, before attending a community college and getting a scholarship to attend UAH. My mother graduated UAH with Summa Cum Laude. Needless to say, during...show more content...
At the time, I feel like she abandoned me, but now I realized she was trying to better herself so that she could provide a better future for herself and I. Even though my mother was not present much while I was growing up, she still helped shaped and mold me into who I am today. By not always being there when I needed her, she taught me how to be independent. When she does come home she was always studying and just by watching her and seeing that consistently, she taught me determination and
Reflection Paper On Who Am I
'Who am I?' Reflection Paper Who am I? This question seems simple, but this is actually a difficult question for an individual to answer about him/herself. If someone ask me all of the sudden about who I am, I might take few minutes to think about it because the questions is really broad. I might answer all these questions about myself about what I think I am. It might be changing from time to time. In this essay I will describe what I think about myself in various aspects: Who am I physically? Physically, I am a healthy person with a healthy body and I am also currently physically active. Besides, I am considered a relatively tall woman in my country, but not when I came to study in the United States–I become one of the shortest people in class. I have a long hair, olive skin tone, oval shaped face and brown eyes. Who am I Emotionally? Emotionally, I am the one who is easy to forgive people for what they did. I am also a person who do not know to express anger to someone which I think might lead to both negative and positive effects to relationship with people in general. I also value my family so much where I work hard in school and college to be better off in life after graduation not only for myself, but foe my family too. Who am I spiritually? I am really glad because for now I am satisfied with myself and I know myself well to understand others. I am a Muslim and Islam is my religion. I tend to keep this in mind with everything that I do in my every day life. Who
A Poem Essay: Who Am I?
Who am I?
I am a tall girl with chestnut hair, forest green eyes and sun–tanned skin. My physique sets me apart from the 7.4 billion other people on our planet. If, however, I were an identical twin, physical characteristics alone would not suffice to distinguish between my sister and me. Even though we would look the same, we would clearly be two different people. Therefore, we can conclude that a mere description of our physique cannot be considered a universal and comprehensive response to the question at hand, as it neglects other aspects of our identity.
Our identity – encompassing numerous elements of being, among which: family, profession, culture, religion, sexuality, personality and emotions – is of unimaginable complexity, such that in a metaphorical sense it may be portrayed as infinite....show more content...
may be answered by the following statement: I am infinity. This holds true from a bio–mathematical approach and a socio–cultural perspective, as well as in a metaphorical sense and in relationship to time. However, an element of concern with this definition is, that as a model answer to all, it would defeat a sense of uniqueness sought by individuals who try to distinguish themselves from their surroundings using the aforementioned question. Specifically, if I am infinity, and You are infinity (in the instance when you define yourself as I am infinity), then language alone cannot highlight the differences between you and me. Thus, the sheer word infinity would be deemed an insufficient response to the essay question; unless infinity were to be considered an infinite concept – infinity accounting for a variety of infinities. It is not within the scope of this essay to discuss whether infinity is truly an infinite concept; but if we were to assume it were not, we would need to contemplate whether I am infinity should be refined to the statement I am a part of infinity, to allow for differentiation among subjects answering the
Who I Am Essay : Who Am I
Why don't we sit down and have a little peak into my life. Who am I? I'm going to let you in on my past, who I have become, and what or who I'm planning to be in my future. I don't quite have myself figured out yet, but I can tell you all about what I do have figured out, and why I am who I am today. I know what I've done to get to this point and what I'm determined to do later on in life. So let's settle down and jump into my life for a story all about who I am.
I came along unexpectedly after two older brothers from my mom and one from my dad. Mom and dad tried for a girl but were soon told my mom could have no more children. I was a pleasant surprise after the news and June 24, 2002 I was brought into this world. With a bit of an age gap in between my brothers and I, I had three pains in my butt and also three more people to protect me. I eventually learned how to fight back to the boys, and from then on the house was even more chaotic than usual.
I was born with a whole in my ear and had to have three surgeries when I was very young. I don't remember much of the surgeries but I do remember how excited I was to eat the multiple popsicles the doctor would give me afterwards, having to wear a very obnoxious head piece for awhile, and not being able to get my ear wet. Soon after the last surgery, my family took my first big vacation in Las Vegas. The whole trip was a success, I even turned six on the Las Vegas strip! This trip was one of my first times starting to
Who I Am I? Essay
Who am I? It is funny you should ask because I was just asking myself the same question. How would I define myself In a culture that seems to so easily attach a label to someone or quickly place people into a category? How would I be able to make you understand my place in the world, or my relationship to the world that surrounds me? If I want you to understand and see the "real me" and how I fit into the big picture, I would have to do an immense amount of soul searching. I would have to choose my ingredients very carefully. First and foremost, I need to gain some insight for myself into my true identity. Once that is completed, I can begin the dialog that would accurately describe who I am. Self–perception, that is the key! If a person wants to describe themselves to someone else, they need to understand who they are. Let me try to paint a picture of who I am in a way that will hopefully be an accurate picture of the "real me". The following article defines in certain terms what I believe makes us who we are, and tells a little of the story of who I have discovered myself to be as I travel along this journey that we call "life".
The Ingredients When describing myself there is a great deal to consider. As a matter of fact, all the things that make up our identity are very complex and not easily catalogued. The first thing that comes to mind is that people are a product of their environments. Next, you might say that we are a combination of the various
Who Am I As A Reader?
Who am I as a reader? Throughout this semester I had the opportunity to read interesting literary works also to think of the subjects that the authors addressed and of the techniques used in their presentation, which meant an interesting experience for me and I consider myself literary enriched. What impressed me most of all works studied, was the theme of irony, flipped in works like Desiree's Baby, and The Story of An Hour, by Kate Chopin and The Open Boat, by Stephen Crane. As a reader, you can imagine the end of the story in a certain way, naturally, assumed by anyone, but at the end, you are surprised by a tragic, unfortunate finish. Also, I must admit that I was deeply impressed by Shirley Jackson's work, The Lottery. I always opted for the tradition to be carried on in the family and in society, but reading this work, I realized that we often inherit bad habits for ourselves and our families and that it is important for young generation to pay attention to what kind of habits they inherited from previous generation, because sometimes, there traditions can bring not only physical death like in Jackson's story, but also moral or social death. In the two stories of Chopin, both, Louise in The Story of An Hour, and Desiree in Desiree's Baby, are two women who are struggling in their marriages. Both loved their husbands, but one wanted freedom, and one was forced to freedom. Each woman 's outcome satisfied no one, not even the reader. In The Story of An Hour,

Who Am I?
Today as I look back at the first paper that I wrote for this class, I see that it is not the type of paper that I usually write. It is not full of big, sophisticated words. Rather it is a paper that does what it is supposed to, explain in simple english my thoughts on the subject. Those thoughts are that today most college kids are whiners and students go to college because it is the norm. I also gave a couple of abstracts to these. I never really took a stand as to which of those pertained to me. But I think that they all do in a sense. In a way I am irresponsible. I leave stuff to the last minute, I cram, and I get a attitude and just say screw it. As for the metaphor part of the first paper, I do feel that I am a parent...show more content...
Quite the contrary. It's just like style. At school my approach to work is very different than when I am at my summer job. At school I can slack and still get away with it. But in the summer, if I slack, I get my ass chewed, and possibly fired. Which of these two is more like who I really am? This worst thing is, I don't even know.
Who am I? What is the relationship between my self and the self that I portray, if there is a difference? I am I, or am I? What follows is the first to verses of a Queensryche song entitled "I am I."
Beating with life you promised life, security, happiness. Unfortunate son cornered, cowering in the pit of circling panes of glass that surround and reveals the ever present it.
"It" is my move, my every look, interpreting gestures, informing others what's undercover and lurking beneath my mask of this year's featured model. I this to much? Close your eyes. Care to look inside? I am I.
I just finished listening to this song and it gave me insight on my present dilemma. I think that these verse say that on the outside, when he looks into the glass, he doesn't see what he wants to see. So he lifted the mask. But then he rethought this maneuver, do I really want everyone to know who I really am. I think that this pertains to me. The me that writes is not the real me. For me writing is a mask. When I write I hide my true self. But why? Because other people may not like who I really
Who Am I? What Do I Believe? Essay
Who am I? What do I believe? I've spent the last few years in a bit of a transition. I was raised in a strong conservative, Christian home, with wonderful parents. I was homeschooled through high school and I was actively involved in the church. Everyone, including me, thought I would go to Bible college and become a missionary.
I joined the Marine Corps at 20 years old, then began attending a state college at 23 (if enough people ask, I blog about what my time in the Marines was like). These last few years have been formative for me, as I have encountered many people, situations, and struggles I had never imagined facing in my youth. I had to reevaluate a lot of things, which caused me to spend a lot of time in a sort of moral limbo, where I wasn't sure where I stood on a lot of things.
Now, I still am exploring some issues, but there are others I am quite certain of. You may disagree with a lot of the things on my list. Good. This is where my journey has lead me, yours may be leading you down another path. I share this as much for myself as anyone else. This is me. This is what I believe:
1: I believe there is a God. I believe it is the God of the Bible. I believe Jesus is his son and the he is the perfect representation of God the father.
2: I believe that love is the essence of human purpose. To love God first, and to love his people second.
3: I believe this world is beautiful. Not just the flora and fauna and environment, though that is a big part of it, but also
Who Am I?
Who am I? Many people would ask this question to themselves. They would try to internalize the question and begin to answer based from the things that would grasp into their mind. Some would start from simple things until they would come to the point thinking of complex things and everything becomes dubitable as Rene Descartes says in his Universal Methodic Doubt. Answering the simple question above is not that easy. Though it is not that easy, there is still an answer. No, many answers rather. In my own point of view, internalization, experience, points of ponder, environment, etc. are some factors that would lead a person to be in a critical state of mind, thus leading him in answering the simple question: Who am I? My parents are Marissa B. Edullantes and Roseller P. Edullantes. They are very supportive especially when we talk of our needs and studies. I can see and feel that from the day we were born, they truly care and love us. I am a woman with dignity living with a purpose. A tall–thin–curly–short–haired–working–college–student woman who is one of those people existing by doing the ordinary day–to–day lifestyle. I wake up, eat, go to school, listen to what the teacher talks about, walk by the hallway of our school, go home, commute, work on my homework, then go to bed until the cycle continues. I am sitting on a chair now, facing a computer while typing everything that comes to my mind and pouring them out from what I feel. At this point, I can say I am my body.
Each one of us desires to reach something in a hurry without striving hard to grab it. As if they are just taking everything for granted and waiting for that dreams to come to them. How pathetic these people's life would be if they continue to live a life full of emptiness and with guidance of no one. How could they answer the simple question if they cannot even help their ownselves? How could they find a solution to their problem with no Absolute truth?
People experience failures in life. They may be embarrassed in front of many people because they were scolded by their teachers of having done something unreasonable, fresh break–ups with their girlfriends or boyfriends, not passing the
Who Am I? Personality
Who am I Everyone in the world grows up asking the same question, who am I? Personality is what defines this answer to this question. Fortunately, there are people like psychiatrist Carl Jung and psychologist Howard Gardner who have given insights and the means of finding out how to answer this age old question. Jung's theory of one's personality is based on four coupled traits that can vary 16 different ways. These 8 traits, extroversion vs. introversion, sensing vs. intuition, thinking vs. feeling, and judging vs. perceiving, make up the essence of who someone is supposed to be (Jung, 1971), unlike Gardner's' theory of 8 intelligences, language smart, math smart, visual smart, body smart, music smart, people smart, self–smart and nature smart (Gardner, 2009), replacing one singular intelligence. Gardner explains these smart components make up a personality. Because of having these personality insights and building blocks, one can describe their own strengths of traits, compare similarities or differences with others and explain why these similarities or differences are important to understand. The first step is to identify my own personality and what my strengths are. I took Jung's personality test and my results are that I am ISFJ, 47% introvert, 38% sensing, 9% feeling and 25% judging. I do agree with the introvert assessment as I tend to want to do things on my own. I am the most creative during the middle of the night while I am alone in my thoughts. I did
Who I Am Essay
When I look in the mirror I know whom I am, but society makes it difficult to understand who I am, because I was born to immigrants of Nigerian descent, and I am a first generation American, that term is sometimes used so loosely. By looking at my name they assume that I am from some island, but I am so quick to tell them that "I am Nigerian", there is another statement that normally follows this. "You do not have an accent". I wonder if I had an accent would I be considered Nigerian and not American; then I say that "My parents are Nigerian" and then that changes, so to them I am just associated with the Nigerian culture it does not make me Nigerian, there has been many discussion between my friends who are the same like me confused to...show more content...
I currently enjoy shocking people with my heritage because there is still a stigma about what a "Haitian" should look like, sound like, etc. I'd say that because I was such a scared little kid who didn't talk much, my family could do little to support me because they didn't know I was having issues (A. Benjamin, personal communication, Dec 1, 2009). This is saying that if you do not walk, talk, or think like them; then you are not considered to be of that ethnicity. Everyday I am on a constant race to discover who I am as an individual. I am fighting this battle whether I choose to acknowledge it or not. Donald Hernandez has written in his book Children of Immigrants: Health, Adjustment, and Public Assistance; he talks about major key points, but the most important one state "Third, because life chances differ greatly according to race and ethnicity in the United States, and because of the race and ethnic composition of immigrants to this country has shifted markedly during recent decades," (3). That is true trying to be one thing is very hard in USA society has an effect of how you may become as the individual. If I were in another country they would just see as an American and nothing else, but the place that I was born and raised they see me as what my parents are Nigerians. I am not American because my parents are from Nigeria; this has been a very constant thing, because of several definitions of what it
Who I Am Essay
Who I am right now is because of the many people, memories, moments, and emotions I have seen and felt. Each of these things defining me and shaping me into the person I am today, and setting me up for the person I will become tomorrow. It's been nothing short of a beautiful, but yet rocky roller coaster ride. There have been times I have felt happiness and laughter, and times I have endured hardship and sadness, but it has only allowed me to become the best possible version of myself. This is who I am.
One of the most important people in my life, is my brother. He is the best brother you could ever ask for, but yet he brings along great challenges, not just for himself or my family, but for me the most. I fully understood when I was about 12 years old, that my brother had disabilities, meaning he was different. He was going to face many challenges and not be able to do things that many people get to do. Things like drive a car, or go to college. As his brother, I felt that he was my responsibility the most, and the moment my mom told me about his condition, it changed my life. Not for the worst, but for the better, because in that instant, I knew I was going to have to work twice as hard in school and outside of school, so that I could become a successful person, and be able to support him, when my parents could no longer. If I gave up in life, and lost hope, it would not only affect me, but my brother, so he will always keep me going and keep me motivated. Not only was I

Who Are You As A Writer? Essay
When presented with the question, "who are you as a writer?", I was speechless at first. But after thinking about it, I realized who I am as a writer has been influenced by so many different sponsors throughout my life and there was not a short, concrete answer. Brandt mentions that "literacy is sponsored by people, institutions, and circumstances that both make it possible for a person to become literate and shape the way the person actually acquires literacy." (Brandt 43) My attitude towards writing has been influenced by teachers, both negatively and positively, by my mother, and by academic assignments over the years. My answer to the question can only be answered by a narrative of my writing life. I have convinced myself that I am a terrible writer, and when presented with a writing assignment, I get anxious instantly. I see writing as a burden and a huge obstacle that gets placed in my life. Academic writing is not fun, but something I value due to the fact that we are a grade driven society. When writing, I write to the guidelines in order to receive points for the requested criteria. The reason being, I gave up on expressing my own ideas because I had been shut down by so many teachers throughout my education. I tried to write down what came to my mind and put my own twist on things, but that was not the "right" way to write papers. In order to make both my teachers and my grades happy, I wrote what they wanted to hear, and even then I was not to the level they
Personal Statement: Who Am I?
Who Am I? I was born _name__ on _date__ in _place__. I am a son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. I was desperately shy as a small child, but grew out of it. My teen years were happy times sports, friends, summers spent in __place_. It all helped shape me into who I am today. My interests are many. I have always enjoyed reading about history and follow the history channel faithfully. I love music. It's been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I find it calming when life gets rocky. I love my parents, especially my mom. Been in real love twice; been in "like" more times than I can count. For the most part school is great, but work could be better. I enjoy writing because I am able to expose my thoughts, emotions and inner feelings it's therapeutic and helps me discover how I "really" feel. Otherwise, I sometimes struggle to put my feelings into words. I'm happy most days and enjoy being around those I love. I am a passionate person healthy and outgoing. In general, I'd classify myself as a good person. I care about causes and injustice in the world. I recognize the power I have to make a difference. One of the greatest experiences I've had was during my freshman year of high school. I decided to join Upward Bound, a Trio program funded by the government to help lower income families prepare for the future and further their children's education. Participating helped me realize that education is extremely important and I know why my parents
Who I Am Essay
Who am I? That is the question not even I know the answer to because only time can answer that. Time changes everything that we've known or what we thought we knew. I too have changed many times over because of the situation and setting. I'm from one of the smallest and poorest nations in Asia where we live in different type of lives we have different culture, and few races unlike America. America has a different environment in which it has many diverse people that are from all around the world with different languages, races, and cultures. What always remained with me were my values. I have many values that have made me who I am today, but the most important are growth and persistence. They are both correlated to each other, but they hold different and bigger meaning to me. To me growth means expanding your knowledge to do something better. For others growth can be calculated in small amount or different physical properties, but for me it is all about the mind (brain). Growing is very important not necessarily by height, but with mind because it can expand beyond horizon and beyond others' ability to see. For example, some of the greatest minds in history had amazing observations like Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla, Leonardo Da Vinci, Aristotle, and many more. With this principals I can make myself more and make my future brighter by expanding my knowledge everyday. I strive growth, do with it I work for excellence with vision. Another value that is important to me is
Who I Am Me Analysis
Who I am as a person is exclusively defined by the aggregation of the distinctive experiences that compose and distinguish my life. The meaning of being Hispanic goes beyond the word itself. As a Colombian, I'm not just part of a group of categorized individuals; I'm a representation of a long–existing heritage, a vivid culture, and a magnificent history. From the hard–working campesino (farmer) in the ample coffee crops of the extensive Colombian cordilleras, to the innovative empresario (entrepreneur) in the capital of Bogotá, to the determined artesano (craftsman) working along the Atlantic coast, being Colombian means sharing a culture, a heritage, a history with other individuals– more than that, it's an ideal of fraternity, of brotherhood....show more content...
The different political, social, and cultural influences that have surrounded me throughout my life have constructed the integral individual I am today. Growing up in Colombia, I spent a great portion of my time playing outside in the dirt, hiking through the forests and creeks, and exploring my surroundings; which enabled me to develop a quest for knowledge and a fascination for the biological sciences. What constitutes my character are the core qualities that formed as a response to my exposure to the different experiences during my early development. The experiences of witnessing poverty and abandonment of people in many different areas of my native country are experiences that marked my life and enabled me to gain the essential quality of altruism. My parents have greatly contributed to my perception of and importance of my identity; they have exemplified that part of being Hispanic is having the drive and desire to surpass beyond the limitations. Through the difficult transition of moving to the United States, I learned to persevere, to work hard, and to fight for the future I envisioned. My goals and aspirations have been cultivated by all these factors that portray my personal ownership of being Hispanic. I see an abstract concept behind the word Hispanic; I associate it with family and the given capacity of carrying the willingness, love, effort, strength, and motivation to
Personal Statement: Who Am I Am Today
In regards to writing an essay for college applications, I can honestly say that I do not have anything too significant to write about. I do not have any big experiences that have shaped me to be who I am today, I do not have a life–shaken, tragic past, and nothing has ever traumatized me or incredibly inspire me to pursue utter happiness. Nothing calamitous has occurred, nor has anything prodigious. My accomplishments are inconsequential, and my setbacks are not worth mentioning. However, I do not see this as an unfortunate matter. Why should I have to go through inner turmoil or challenging circumstances to have a certain outlook on life? My own mindset has shaped me to become who I am today, regardless of what I have and have not been through.
College Admissions Essay: Who Am I?
Who am I? This question takes me back to my family's history and my childhood and how it impacted my life. Just as the quote by Marcus Garvey, "A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots." This topic also allows me to reflect on my experiences and how that impacted who I am today. Not only that my future also defines who I am, such as my future dreams, and what I am doing now to make those dreams come true. Plus, my values, and beliefs that I carry with me.
First, my family history is a part of who I am. I still remember the time we all went to court because of both my parents. This was the time when they were fighting for custody. Though we were not even needed there all seven of us kids were brought there to court by my dad and grandpa. They then had to put us in a room, so we could not hear and had us wait patiently till the end. And I still remember my mom telling me what...show more content...
My goals and dreams does not stop there because even though I may work part time as a nursing assistant I want to major in Radiologic Technology. Radiologic tech. consists of medical people who perform diagnostic imaging exams and manages radiation therapy treatments, and they are people who are educated in anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, radiation safety, radiation safety and basic patient care, which basic patient care, and patient positioning I already know how to do, since my current job usually consists of that kind of requirement. The reason why I chose this route instead of becoming a nurse is because I feel as though I would be more comfortable in that area rather than the nursing route. In fact that is the reason why I am attending Fresno City College so that I can make my dreams and goals come true. And if I have to stop work I will stop working for school because school will get me beyond where I am
Who I Am As A Person
Who I am as a person has changed over the year I have attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy, however, the basis of who I am has remained the same. Being a Catholic–Christian is the base of who I am as a person. My one goal is to be a saint and at the end of the day, despite all my other goals, this is the only one that truly matters and never alters. My faith is what pushes me to be a better person, a better leader, a better follower. My whole life should be to the glory of God, and I work on that each day and reevaluate often. I screw up plenty of times and fall off the narrow path, but something in me keeps me going back. I refuse to give up on my faith and God will not ever give up on me. So I will not stop striving to be a better person, a better leader, or a better follower. In addition to being a strong Christian, I am a sister to eight siblings, a daughter to unbelievably supportive parents, and a granddaughter to encouraging grandparents. Since I am about 2500 miles from home, the meaning of these relationships have changed. Supporting my siblings has gone from watching their sporting events, to trying to catch them on the phone on Sunday. My parents are still my number one support system, but their support is more meaningful to me now that I am away. They still continue to teach me lessons when I call home and need advice. They still proof–read my essays, even this one, and listen to me complain. Yet, now I have a greater amount of respect for them
