Essay On Patriotism In The United States
As a growing number of Americans embrace a grounded, evident, and scientific understanding of the world around them in day to day life, many have become concerned about state and federal policies that are being based off of religious origins, primarily Christian. The United States has always been a nation with a distinct separation of Church and State, but the 20th Century America casted itself as a country of morals and faith, men of God, a counter to what many saw as the "godless Communist ideology" overseas. Patriotism was seemingly overnight blended into faith for God and faith for Country. However there are many today who feel that this has explicitly blurred the line drawn between Church and State. Classroom textbooks and state regulations...show more content...
Only two percent of Americans are openly atheist (Maqbool). The SCA's reason for existence is not to remove religion from America, nor would it ever happen. Instead there is a time and place to practice worship and a time and place make laws based on the Constitution. The SCA has many areas with main issues regarding their campaign, but there are three that remain the top concern. Education, in which the belief is children should not be subjected to religious education or exercises in a public school. Health and Safety is another issue at large, where the SCA believes that "an individual should not be compromised by the religious beliefs of another person or group." The third largest issue the SCA is fighting for is taxation. "Religious organizations should not be exempt from the requirements and restrictions of U.S. tax policies." In a recent investigation by the Washington Post, churches are subsidized for state and federal income tax, property tax, investment tax, and the Faith Based subsidy, amounting to an incredible seventy one billion dollars
What Does It Mean To Be A Patriot
In this source analysis, the ideas of patriotism as a reflection will be analyzed via film and quote. Patriotism by definition is an emotional attachment to a nation which an individual recognizes as their homeland. This feeling of patriotism can lead members of the nation to fight for the rights of their nation, and that these citizens will do anything they can to achieve their desired goal. This idea of patriotism is displayed throughout Roland Emmerich's movie, "The Patriot" and a quote from Barack Obama on what rights and freedoms are to every US citizen.
In "The Patriot", Emmerich focuses heavily on contract of characters in order to show these ideologies of patriotism. Benjamin Martin, the protagonist has traits of a family man and is not necessarily considered a patriot. As a single father, his large family is his number one priority, and fighting a war is a secondary mission. He originally had no intention of fighting in the war, however his son Gabriel convinces him to fight. Gabriel throughout the movie is a symbol of a patriot, and all aspects of his character lean towards a nation's citizen who aims for freedom. Gabriel thinks that his father "[hiding] behind his family" is cowardly, and that a true American would fight for the freedom of their nation....show more content...
Obama also mentions how that rights come with responsibilities to follow, and that the aforementioned freedoms cannot be achieved without following said responsibilities. Obama alludes to patriotism in that "a freedom without... patriotism, is unworthy of our founding ideals". Those who are a patriot, will cherish the rights and freedoms whilst still following the fundamental responsibilities of being an American citizen. Sacrifices were and still must be made in order to achieve true freedom, and those with a patriotic demeanor are more than willing to make said
Patriotism In Julius Caesar
Effectiveness of Patriotism
Being Patriotic is a great thing until it goes bad. Over the course of the play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Brutus was a very impactful character. He was one of the main leaders of the conspiracy that killed Caesar. Brutus had a wife named Portia, who later in the play died. After the conspiracy killed Caesar, there were two speeches spoken one from Brutus and the other from Antony who was Caesar's right hand man. Soon after the death of Caesar, Brutus and Antony fought in a battle against each other. The battle lead to countless people left dead and Brutus kills himself. During the play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar written by William Shakespeare Brutus patriotism caused him to make decisions based on the good of Rome, not thinking of others' thoughts, or opinions including his own. Brutus made an overwhelming amount of decisions based on the good of Rome, not contemplating how it could affect or hurt himself or those around him. One example of this is after Brutus and the conspirators killed Brutus he gave a speech. In this speech he said, "If then that friend demand why/ Brutus rose against Caesar, this is my answer: Not/ that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more." (3.2.20–22). This quote is saying that the reason Brutus killed Caesar was not because he disliked him, but because he thought it was for the good of Rome. Brutus made this decision solely based on patriotism. He never thought about the effects or consequences it
What Patriotism Means To Me
Patriotism to me For my national heritage essay, I chose the topic what patriotism means to me. I hope this essay will help many realize how great America is. Also, I want this essay to inspire others to write about our country. First of all, the definition of patriotism is a love for ones country. In my context that means, saying the pledge, singing the national anthem, supporting troops, and speaking out. First up, saying the pledge. Saying the pledge is a part of patriotism because you are respecting your country by placing your hand over your heart and respecting our government, our nation or union, and our God. Second is singing the National Anthem, also know as the Star Spangled Banner. This is another very important part of
Patriotism Essay
The recent terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon have caused confusion on the topic of patriotism. The best way to start understanding patriotism is to simply define it. Patriotism is a person's level of loyalty toward their country. Displays of true patriotism are prominent in times of despair, such as wars and terrorist attacks. However, many people have discrepancies on what displays of patriotism really are. Some people believe that showing patriotism can be accomplished by waving the flag and singing the national anthem. Others believe that a person must be much more involved in a cause to show patriotism. It is true that waving a flag doesn't accomplish much. Although this action displays good intentions, it...show more content...
But different men often see the same subject in different lights" (Henry, 88). The people that believe they have done enough by waving a flag and singing the national anthem have failed to form their own opinions of patriotism. If the United States has a government controlled by the people, then the strength of the country depends on the level of loyalty among the people. So by performing only the easiest tasks to show support for the country, these people are causing the country to become less powerful. Basing a country on laziness could be paralleled to basing a document on lies.
Finally, the most obvious fault on the side that claims waving a flag is patriotism is the fact that very few people actually did this before the terrorist attacks. This so called patriotism transformed from a dormant state into a state of overabundance in only a few days time. This observation alone is evidence of the invalidity of waving a flag and singing the national anthem. Additionally, some people have enough disrespect for our country to take advantage of fellow citizens during this time of confusion by selling cheap American flags at twenty dollars each. These people are playing jump rope with the line between patriotism and treason as if patriotism isn't a serious subject. Sadly, the people who failed to realize their own false patriotism were also the ones being scammed by companies.
Clearly,

What It Means To Be Patriotic In America
When I was younger I felt like I knew what it meant to be patriotic in America, but as times change I feel like I have no clue what it means to be patriotic in America today. I believe I had a grasp on what it means to be patriotic because, I had grown up in Gallup New Mexico–known to be the most patriotic town in The United States of America. Then Earlier in my life I also had to deal with my brother, who went into a recruiter's office and signed up to be shipped off to Afghanistan the very next day. When he would visit he would have these lectures on how we should show our patriotism. He would eventually force my mother to put up the American flag in the front porch to show respect for the country and those who served it. As I got older
What Does It Mean To Be A Patriot Essay
A patriot is someone who will support and defend their country at all cost whatsoever with full allegiance and commitment. Only a true patriot would lay his or her life down for their country without any second thoughts. One may ask what the word patriotism truly means to a patriot and the answer is everything. Patriotism is the act of vigorously supporting one's country with full honor and commitment. There is no higher deed to a patriot than patriotism. Although war is often viewed as a harsh and cruel thing, to a patriot it is the most important thing in the world because it means defending a country that they love and honor. If an enemy enters into a country and had the audacity to try to destroy it or take it over a patriot will be one
Meaning Of Patriotism
The True Meaning of Patriotism As Jesse Ventura the former governor of Minnesota would say, "Patriotism is voluntary. It is a feeling of loyalty and allegiance that is the result of knowledge and belief. A patriot shows their patriotism through their actions by their choice." That being said, what should patriotism mean to us, and what should we do to be patriotic? Patriotism means to respect your founding fathers and constrain the ideas they put forth to us which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Therefore all people of the United States of American should respect, honor, and show devotion towards patriotism by encouraging others to do what's right, requiring people to devote their time to what's important, and asking people to righteously spend their time honoring our country. Patriotism is taken for granted a lot these days. It's like nobody realizes that if we don't come to our senses, America as a whole is going to ruin what the true meaning of patriotism is for the generations that are yet to come. Encouraging others to do things suck as following the law, teaching our kids at a young age what patriotism is, and voting could be a way to help everyone get involved....show more content...

Patriotism And Blind Patriotism
Introduction
In the United States, it is not uncommon to see an American flag in someone's yard or on a bumper sticker on a car. Americans are patriotic and this is evident throughout the year and especially on Independence Day. The American flag, the pledge of allegiance, and the national anthem are all national symbols. To many Americans, these symbols represent what the country stands for which is freedom and justice for all. Patriotism is common in the United States and it is this love of nation, the pride that one feels, and the loyalty to the country that many believe is what being an American is all about. Patriotism is ingrained in this nation since its founding and continues to be important today. Moreover, I will examine not only patriotism but also religion and party identification. Although people in the United States are attending Church at lower rates; I believe that religion has an effect on party identification and patriotism. I am especially interested in the relationship between blind patriotism and party identification and how much influence religious beliefs have on both. I hypothesize that if a person identifies as an Evangelical Christian, then they are more likely to be Republicans and that there will be a positive relationship between blind patriotism and Christianity. Meaning that if a person identifies as an Evangelical Christian, then they are more likely to be Republicans and engage in blind patriotism. I think that this will be the case

Controversial end leads to Patriots win over Steelers, Refs gift Patriots game with this mind–boggling non catch, Questionable call takes lead away from Bills vs. Patriots, Controversial call vs. Jets leads to Patriots victory. These are just some of the controversial calls that favored the New England Patriots and ended up leading to a victory. If you are not a New England Patriots fan in this era, i'm sorry. The National Football League (NFL) has shown their love for the team along with all the referees and fans. Makes sense because of the market that the team gives the league. Tom Brady being the greatest quarterback of all–time and shattering records that athletes left behind after a career. Yet, Tom Brady, also known as the G.O.A.T, seems to be still in his prime after fifteen years in the league. After all, the Patriots color combination is red, white, and blue thus the reason why they are referred to as the new "America's team". The New England Patriots...show more content...
If you are not a Patriot fan, this may or bother you because of the political viewpoint of the National Football League. It seems to other fans that the League does not want them to lose. Why would they when the Patriots have arguably the best quarterback to have ever played in the league on their active roster. The Patriots bring entertainment to the league. After Tom Brady retires, which will probably be within the next five years, the entertainment will move to the team with another MVP type callober superstar. If you are a fan, you can sit back and just watch that entertainment that Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski bring you. Along with not needing to worry about if the team is down by a few points because either; the other team blows a lead (Atlanta Falcons) or the referees got your
Patriotism And Racism Essay
Patriotism in history class can and does contribute acts of racism in our society. By not covering the histories of oppressed people in depth and with the respect it deserves, those who are privileged do not understand what is happening when they see minorities protesting injustice or advocating for civil rights. This leads to feelings of anger and hate towards minorities, and even acts of retaliation. Racism has always been an issue in American society, but perhaps today it is more important than ever. Increased acts of racism are being reported, and white supremacists and neo–Nazis are becoming more emboldened. Some even feel as if they are the targets of discrimination, as evidenced by the appropriation of the statement 'Black...show more content...
[...] Opposing this form of patriotism is 'democratic patriotism' in which students are taught to laud the principles– like liberty and justice–on which the US government is founded. (2015, p.264–265)
Both approaches to patriotizing history are not appropriate for history curriculums, and contradict the historiographic methods used to examine history. Traditional patriotism in the history curriculum is not nearly as prevalent as it used to be in the past, but has made a recent comeback in our society. This form of patriotism blatantly suppresses questioning, which stamps out any form of critical thinking that a student would normally use to analyze historical events. Questioning the past is an essential part of historical analysis, and without it a history class turns into a nationalistic brain washing session. Kissling, when studying Rugg and Krueger's elementary school textbooks notes that even while they had patriotic overtones the textbooks were still criticized by some at the time for not being patriotic enough, showing how forced patriotism was back in the 1930's. (2015, p.271) This is the kind patriotism today is taught in places like North Korea. What is more prevalent in American society today is democratic patriotism. While much more inclusive that traditional patriotism, democratic
Argumentative Essay On Patriotism
To stand or not stand? That is the question regarding the recent controversy with the National Football League. Many football players have protested against America's oppression of African Americans and other minorities by linking arms with their peers, and kneeling while the National Anthem , The Star Spangled Banner, played in the arenas. Those who oppose this form of protest, feel as though by not standing with hand over heart, the players are disrespecting our country and the veterans who fought for it. They have also called those who are protesting "bad Americans". Both sides have their own ideas of "America the Beautiful", and has their own idea of what patriotism is. What exactly is patriotism? What does a "bad American" look like? Maybe with a little more understanding of what patriotism is, we can begin to unravel the meaning of a "good American". Only by doing so can we start to weigh in on what is right and wrong within this controversy This type of protest has been going on years before Colin Kaepernick decided to sit down during the national anthem in August 2016. The African American gold and bronze medalists of the 1968 Olympics, raised their fists during the national anthem becuase they wanted to stand up against the oppression of minorities and human rights. On the website Politifacts, Louis Jacobson wrote that, in March 1996, Mahmoud Abdul–Rauf, who converted to Islam, "said he did not believe in nationalistic ideologies, according to the New York
American Patriotism Essay
The United States of America is a proud country. Ever since the dawn of American independence in 1776, citizens have boasted about their beloved land of the free and home of the brave, and ever since the motion picture camera was invented, American patriotism has bled into film. As opposed to nationalism, which is the "sentiment of superiority and aggression toward other countries", patriotism is "pride in one's nation–state, and a willingness to defend it if necessary... Patriotism is the courage of national self–determination" ("Nationalism vs. Patriotism"). What is interesting about the breed of patriotism that has arisen in Hollywood, however, is that it does not place blind faith in a flag that can do no wrong. Rather, there are prevalent layers of moral and ethical conflict; these films challenge audiences. Two movies which exemplify this type of modern–day patriotism are American Assassin (2017) and American Made (2017). Through both shared and unique plot devices and thematic elements, American Assassin and American Made challenge audience members' unconditional support for their respective American–born heroes and their actions, ultimately asking if a film can be patriotic without portraying the United States in a perfectly flattering light.
The titles of American Made and American Assassin serve as starting points for their reflections of modern–day patriotism. The sentiment behind the title "American Made" is unequivocally linked to the concept of the "American

Service Shows More than Patriotism
The healthcare reform debate has been on the minds of many Americans in recent years. Democrats have worked to put Obamacare in place in 2009 and want to fix issues using the existing platform. Many Republicans are currently working to repeal and replace Obamacare with Trumpcare. The healthcare debate has come to a standstill in Congress as deep party lines persist. In August 2017, following the fights over the universal healthcare debate, TCA Regional News reported that Democrat Amy McGrath is running for Congress in the state of Kentucky against Republican Andy Barr in 2018 (Yeager). McGrath felt led to run due to Barr's support of repealing the Affordable Care Act and due to the lessons she learned at...show more content...
This is another image used to demonstrate the American army's protection and promote patriotism. The value of patriotism is seen throughout military and American flag images in the advertisement.
The value of nontraditional gender roles is subtly seen through the auditory and visual illustrations in the advertisement. Amy McGrath explains that in a previous experience of hers, her local Congressman wrote to her that he believed that women should not be allowed to serve in combat as the image of the letter appears on screen with the parts mentioned highlighted. McGrath explains that she persisted and joined the Naval Academy anyway. This appeals to nontraditional gender roles because it persuades the viewers that McGrath is different because she is a woman who broke the mold in a male–dominated area. McGrath is also seen with having short hair and wearing a dark bomber jacket, white button–up, and loose pants. McGrath is noticeably not wearing much make–up and has simple earrings and a wedding band. By wearing non–feminine clothes, McGrath appeals to value of nontraditional gender roles. McGrath is shown to walking with her husband and young children down a grassy hill. McGrath is seen in a bright pink shirt and khaki dress pants while holding her husband's hand. Her husband is wearing a blue button–up shirt and dark dress pants while holding their toddler. Twin preschooler boys, dressed in the same blue polo and khaki shorts, run and play in front of their parents.
Positive And Negative Effects Of Patriotism
"Patriotism – love of country –devotion to the land that bore us – is pressed upon us now as paramount to every other notion in its claims on head, hand and heart" (Everett 151). Showing love and respect towards one's own country is called patriotism. One must treat their country like it's their mother, that's why it is called Motherland. Patriotism has positive and negative impacts but at the same time, it can fill your heart with pride and joy. Patriotism strikes a lot of mixed emotions, some, however, consider themselves patriotic because they hang a flag outside their house, and others just see it as racism and being repulsive. However, Patriotism is shown within each country and it can have many positive and negative effects.
People like George Washington and Mahatma Gandhi are considered patriots. They have always had great pride in the country and always thought in what was best before deciding to take any actions. George Washington was the leader of the army who helped to fight for America's freedom and was the first president of The United States. Mahatma Gandhi had fought for India's independence. Both of these people had shown patriotism for their country by fighting for what was right, not only for the country but the people. After the September 11 incident of the twin towers being blown up, many people began to register for the army or even donate blood. However, if one is patriotic towards their country that does not mean one must agree with the president at
Persuasive Essay On Patriotism
In a country full of immigrants with different backgrounds, a strong sense of patriotism unifies our nation. Throughout the country, in businesses, schools, sporting events and other situations, American citizens are required to honor our country by playing the National Anthem, saying the Pledge of Allegiance or displaying a flag. Because of this nationwide patriotism, it is to be expected that arguments have arisen over the National Football League players who kneel while the National Anthem plays before their games. By quietly opposing police brutality and cruelty in the United States, NFL players are justified in their demonstrations since their protests are constitutional and legal. This act of kneeling, caught the attention of many influential people, including the President, Donald Trump. After the president repeatedly tweeted how the players who kneel are contemptible, many other NFL players, coaches and even some team owners began kneeling, holding hands, or raising a fist while the Star Spangled Banner plays. The President's job is to appoint federal officials, enforce the law, improve government policies, and strengthen the national budget. Where in that job description does it state that they should be concerned with NFL rules and policies and how they are acted upon? Although they did not get much attention until after the president became involved, these protests first began when in 2016, Colin Kaepernick shocked the nation by sitting while the National Anthem
Reflection About Patriotism
The colors red, white, and blue have become a staple of freedom within this country, ensuring the colors consume every room they enter and earn a loud chant of boastful pride. A large portion of my family, namely the older people, are more right–leaning than they are left. With their opinions growing more prominent as the 2016 election peaked, I gained insight in how my family functions. Both the older and newer generations began to express feelings, and for some it was unexpected. While some Americans can be loyal to their community, want to help others with their simplest of problems, and ensure that every individual has an amazing life, there will always be those who take things to an extreme and sadly; those people are the ones who speak the loudest. There's this strong sense of patriotism and pride in America that mimics devotion or worshipping of the country. When people go to a public sporting event, or even a public school, the National Anthem is played and people are expected to stand up and sing along with it, as a form of expressing pride in the country. Houses proudly display the American flag on a flagpole in their yard all over, and it is almost impossible to drive in a subdivision or street without seeing one. While it seems patriotic to most it can seem borderline nationalistic to other countries. Once America breaches the border on patriotism and nationalism, the country is facing a large issue with how it displays pride in its country. Without getting
Essay On Being A Patriot
Being a Patriot is something that a person is not born with, but is an option that we all can write in our present and even our future. Throughout the many years that I've attended Miramar High School, the definition of being a Patriot never came with a list classifications that discriminated anyone from being admired, honored, and even receiving the label of being a role model to many. Regardless of the admiration that a Patriot receives, a true Patriot doesn't wallow in their admiration, but uses it to encourage their character to become a positive influence and fight for the righteous way. While reminiscing about the many people who I claim to be Patriots, I'll have to state that the two main character traits to be a Patriot would have to be responsibility and tolerance.
When you reflect upon the many Patriots throughout life, without aspiration in their minds and a purpose in their heart, the idea of leaving their home would seem to hold no value to them, which is why responsibility is one of the key components to becoming a Patriot in the eyes of many. It's no lie that the world that we live in, is not perfect. From the people who discriminate for the color of our skin to the ones who judge us because of the wealth class that we were born in, a Patriot never lets the negative problems of...show more content...
Without it, the many problems that we try to solve can get more powerful in a negative manner than in a positive one. That is why many Patriots will think about the most ethical and most effective way of solving the problem rather than finding the effortless way out. We look into this world and we realize that we can't have our eyes closed to achieve all of our goals, but we can't let everyone walk all over us, just because they claim to have more knowledge than us. As a Patriot, I'm tolerant, especially in this world full of people who has more words to speak than
Julius Caesar Patriotism
Alluding to Shakespeare's Julius Caesar likewise anticipates Hally and Sam's relationship. In the play, Julius Caesar's closest companion, Brutus, battles amongst fellowship and patriotism. Brutus essentially deceives Caesar since he trusts that Rome would be better without Caesar's oppressive ruling. Similar to Brutus, Hally figuratively stabs Sam in the back causing the demise of their friendship. This contention between friendship versus patriotism is parallel to Hally's contention of friendship versus apartheid. Hally battles to love Sam as a companion and even a father figure. However, his surroundings is always reminding him about the uniqueness amongst blacks and whites.
