His affair with Abigail is the only major flaw attributing to his own righteous character. Abigail Williams is intent on destroying Elizabeth Proctor and accuses her of witchcraft.
As a result of his foolish actions, Proctor's affair drove Abigail to plot to get Proctor's wife Elizabeth out of the picture so that she could take her place. She was intelligent enough to realize that if she accused the wife of a well–respected man of the village of conspiring with the devil, no one would believe and she would be thrown in jail for lying to the court. It was as if Abigail decided that if she filled the jails with people who were not as respected, no one would notice one more person passing through the courts. Abigail was driven by the hope that she and Proctor had this affair, that he made a sort of a promise to her. She thought that if Proctor did not have Elizabeth he would then love her instead, but John Proctor was intent on protecting his wife's name no matter what the cost. People are faced with moral issues all throughout their life, and have to make the right choice. John Proctor is faced with a difficult situation that affected his life forever.
In the Crucible by Arthur Miller John Proctor shows great pride and bravery when he tears up the ticket to save his own life. Proctor changes his mind at the end of the play and decides to die being true to himself and God.
First, John Proctor is given the chance to save his own life. When Proctor is being forced to sign a written confession, he has a sudden change of heart. Instead of living the rest of his life being looked at as a liar, Proctor chooses to do the moral thing and tear up the confession. He is worried about his good name being tainted forever. Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How many I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!"(Miller Act IV Lns 725–730). During those few moments, Proctor makes this decision because he feels he is a moral person. Proctor was a person that did not always go to church, but still had a strong relationship with God. He is more concerned with his relationship with God than being judged by the other Puritans for not going to church. So, when Judge Danforth asks Proctor to sign the confession, he will not sign because he doesn't want to go against God and sin. He knows deep down that the only judge of him will be God and not the rest of the town. Rebecca Nurse also has similar views as John
Proctor. When Rebecca Nurse hears the news of Proctor confessing, she is surprised because this isn't in Proctor's character. He sees the astonishment in Goody Nurse and this also sparked him to tear up the confession.
Next, Proctor's idea of morality differs from that of the judges'. Proctor believes that a morally righteous person is one who holds true to their word. For example, he will not sign his name to the confession solely because he will not lie. Proctor has the

John Proctor, in The Crucible by Arthur Miller, possess good characteristics of honesty as well as a strive for what is right, but also he has faults of anger and adultery; these both affect the morality of the characters in the story in a major way. First of all, John Proctor has good characteristics that affect the characters in a positive way. He sees that the witch trials are morally wrong, despite what others think, so he does whatever he can to stop it. He scornfully replies to Parris's ignorant comment, "There might also be a dragon with five legs in my house, but no one has ever seen it" (109). His temper toward Mary Warren causes her to fear and not truly respect him. The good side and bad of John Proctor both affect the play as a whole. His good character of always striving for what is right helped stop the whole witch trials. During this statement, John observed how his action effected others; "Beguile me not! I blacken all of them when this is nailed to the church the very day they hang for silence!" (150). Here he shows that he was willing to give his life to stop the hysteria and save many lives even if it would cost his life. He was a man that tried to do what was right and this turned the majority's view point in Salem away from the court and saving many innocent people from the noose. However, there was a wicked side of John Proctor as well. Elizabeth, in this statement, explains what she believes motivates Abigail during this time; "Spoke or silent, a promise is surely made. And she may dote one now– I am sure she does– and thinks to kill me, then to take my place" (64). Elizabeth
Essay about John Proctor: A Character Analysis
In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, various characters, whether it is from physical trials or unseen personal struggles, experience some kind of major conflict. There are those who spend every day in fear, wondering whether or not they will be falsely accused of witchcraft. There are others who struggle with more internal trials, such as forgiving those who have hurt them. The protagonist, John Proctor, was a man of strong moral constitution, and held himself to a high standard for the sake of his good name and family. As a result of this, he struggled with a major internal conflict throughout the play. To begin with, Proctor was considered a strong person in the community, and he was respected for it. He held himself to a high moral standard, not because his religion tells him to, but because he felt like it is the right thing to do. When he had his affair with Abigail, he felt like ". . . a sinner not only against the moral fashion of the time, but against his own vision of decent conduct" (Miller 21). He already showed he is far from orthodox in his religion, and if he did not agree with the rules, he did not abide by them. It is doubtful he would have felt the guilt and self loathing he did if his moral expectations were not as high as they were, whether it was the law in his church or not.
Another inner quality that defines John Proctor is the value he holds to his good name. Proctor is a firm believer in the fact that one's name is the only thing that remains after death, and what is done with it while living can affect one's posterity for generations. This is the driving force behind his actions in the final act of the play. At first, he felt no shame in lying to the court about his accusation of witchcraft because he felt there was no more damage he could do to his reputation and that one more sin would not make any difference. His attitude changed when he realized his confession would mean blackening the name of those who already had died, and his sons would have to live with that mark on their names. He knew he could not teach his sons ". . . to walk like

Proctor was afraid of punishment, which caused him to lie, and Kohlberg calls this moral state "Punishment and Obedience." It states the following;
Avoidance of physical punishment and deference to power. Punishment is an automatic response of physical retaliation. The immediate physical consequences of an action determine its goodness or badness. The atrocities carried out by soldiers during the holocaust who were simply "carrying out orders" under threat of punishment, illustrate that adults as well as children may function at stage one level. "Might makes right." Proctor lied to "avoid physical punishment," the only reason that he finally told the truth was to point Abigail out as a fraud, but it actually ended up with everyone thinking he was lying.
