Realism Theatre Essay
Realism is the movement toward representing reality as it is, in art. Realistic drama is an attempt to portray life on stage, a movement away from the conventional melodramas and sentimental comedies of the 1700s. It is expressed in theatre through the use of symbolism, character development, stage setting and storyline and is exemplified in plays such as Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House and Anton Chekhov's The Three Sisters. The arrival of realism was indeed good for theatre as it promoted greater audience involvement and raised awareness of contemporary social and moral issues. It also provided and continues to provide a medium through which playwrights can express their views about societal values, attitudes and morals. A Doll's...show more content...
Thus drama became an experience closely impinging on the conscience of the audience. Ibsen was also unique for his use of symbolism to assist realism on stage. Symbolic significance is presented through the detail of design, props and actions of the characters. For example, in Act III, Nora goes offstage to get changed; "I'm changing. No more fancy dress". It is a symbolic representation of her personal change, one where she has come to the realization that she has been living the life of a doll, confined to the roles of a
"featherbrain", "plaything", "dove",
"skylark" and "songbird". Thus, symbolism enhanced realism, and its effect can be seen as positive in the sense that it stirred conscious awareness of values. The stage settings of A Doll's House are an integral part of the theatrical design, and not mere décor to be overlooked. The setting in
Act II; "
the Christmas tree stands stripped of its decorations and with its candles burnt to stumps" is symbolic of the lack of happiness in Nora's life at that moment. Also the change of setting in Act III; "The tables and chairs have been moved centre" foreshadows a character change that will take place in Nora. The many references to doors also have significance beyond the stage directions. The play begins with the opening of the door and finishes with the "slamming" of the door. Nora enters the doll's house with the values of society and departs from it, symbolizing her rejection of
Essay on Film Realism
Response Paper: The Complete Film
The introduction of sound films in the late 1920's was a divisive issue among those involved and interested in the emerging motion picture industry. Even though it wasn't the sudden breakthrough it is often perceived to be, the addition of sound and voice to mainstream cinema revolutionized movie making and led to conflicting viewpoints as to whether or not this innovation was a positive progression for film as an art and as an industry.
While the addition of sound to films was generally perceived as an advancement, some critics and filmmakers believed that it takes away from the artistic essence of the medium. Among these traditionalists was Rudolph Arnheim, an art critic who thought the technological...show more content...
While Arnheim's views on the future of film and the idea of a complete film can be somewhat insightful, I disagree with his conclusion that the introduction of sound and color diminishes the creative quality and originality of movies. He states his belief that eventually film will develop to the point where we "we have nothing to look forward to" (Arnheim , 184).
In all forms of art there is a natural inclination to explore and experiment within the medium. The resulting methods and formats can be seen as alternatives and additions to existing ones. I do not believe that, in terms of technical decisions, there is a superior style of film making that the industry progresses to on a set path. I agree with Arnheim's statement that "there is no objection to the complete film as an alternative to the stage" if it exists with the other types of films (Arhheim, 186). In some cases advances in method and technique are used to fix the problems of technological limitations. In other cases these advances provide alternatives. The introduction of color is described by the latter. Color was introduced as an alternative to black and white movies but never completely replaced them and didn't stop the use of black and white as an effective technique in modern cinema.
The use of sound, on the other hand, was a solution rather than an alternative. Since the early
Realism Essay
Realism
Realism means accuracy of speech and setting, thorough background detail and a concern for vermisimitude or realism could mean the willingness to face the facts. Realism is hard to define. There are different types of realism documentary, social, emotional and dramatic.
Technical codes play an important role in making realism in soaps, this refers to documentary realism where soaps are supposed to look like they haven't been constructed and camera work shouldn't be too complicated, it should be like looking in on someone's life through their window. The editing should be invisible making the soap look like a continuous shot so it doesn't look like we are watching a piece of...show more content...
The setting of Eastenders is a mythical 1950's setting with the street markets and the close community people knowing everybody else's business. I think that they have made this representation look very realistic but I also think that people will find it hard to relate to this more because most London communities are not like this anymore and people would feel uneasy and unsafe with the idea of keeping their backdoor open all day.
Storylines are another important element in realism; it involves the use of social realism where soaps use social issues (eg. Teenage pregnancy; In Coronation Street Sarah Platt deals with the pressures of becoming pregnant at the age of 13. Another example of a social issue is family feuds, which is shown constantly in Eastenders within the Slater family.) that effect the working class. This is good because the audience will then feel that they can relate to at least one social issue and involves them more with the soap. Emotional realism is also used, people become attached, they are watching something that is emotionally true to life but what they see isn't real on a denotative level. An example of this is in Coronation Street, when Karen was experiencing a miscarriage and having to cope with the grief afterwards. Another example is in Eastenders, when Little Mo was experiencing constant domestic violence from
Essay on Magical Realism
Magical Realism
The idea of a genre of art that is called magical realism is less a trend than a tradition, an evolving genre that has its waxings and wanings, where each evolving form expresses an idea that may overlap another, yet at the same time branches off and creates something very different. What began in the visual arts has become a contemporary literary genre due to divergences. Contemporary Latin American writers of this mode include Alejo Carpentier, Jorge Luis Borges, Isabel Allende, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Octavio Paz, Pablo Neruda, and Majorie Agosin. At the same time there are many writers of the genre world wide, though every form may take one new meaning. The magical realist does not depend on the natural or physical...show more content...
Still, through Roh's conception of the term magical realism, he wished to infer that there is not necessarily any ancestry or chronology that a name such as Post–Expression would imply; he wanted to break from designating it as an aspect of a movement (Zamora 5; 15–16). With a more contemporary view of magical realism that brings it into not only the literary circles, but more specifically the Latin American literary circles, and also overlaps with magical realism initial meanings, Alejo Carpentier called magical realism "lo real maravilloso americano."
He initiates a uniquely American form of magical realism that opposes the European Surrealist meaning. Magical realism was not to imply a conscious assault on conventionally depicted reality but, rather, an amplification of perceived reality required by and inherent in Latin America nature and culture (Zamora 75). Carpentier speaking on behalf of Latin American magical realism argued:
"The fantastic is not to be discovered by subverting or transcending reality with abstract forms and manufactured combinations of images. Rather, the fantastic inheres in the natural and human realities of time and place, where improbable juxtapositions and marvelous mixtures exist by virtue of Latin America's varied history, geography, demography, and politics – not by manifesto."
The understanding of the different forms of magical realism that have developed, and the contradictions within those forms, allows us to

The way the show works is the contestants go and pick up their prospective blind date and are told to plan out a day of fun. A typical date usually goes like this: first the individual meets the other at some agreed upon location. They introduce themselves and then head out. They then proceed to usually some type of pre–dinner activity (ex. shopping, walk, or rock climbing). Then there is dinner of some sort were they do some more talking and use this as a window for opportunity to see what may happen later on that night. After dinner there is some type of after dinner event (ex. movie, dancing, moon light walk, etc.). From there they head to some one's place of residence and usually engage in some R–rated activities. When that is over part two begins. They all come together on the air were they talk about what happened on the two dates. This is when things begin to get interesting!!! When the participants get together it all starts out well. They
Conventions Of Realism In Literature
Realism in literature might be defined as an approach that attempts to describe life without idealization of romantic subjectivity. Even if there are no limits to anyone century or group of writers, it is frequently associated with the literary movement of 19th century France which attempts to depict its real society (The Columbia Encyclopedia ). The members of the movement tried to show a true reflection of a reality that arose as a response to the idealistic world of romanticism. Realism highlights not only the simplicity, the truth in depicting social environment, relationships, life and the characters, who are shaped by it but also the representation of reality which adheres to a loose collection of conventions. Other relevant characteristics of Realism are an emphasis on details, especially details of the landscape, nature, characters' emotions and behavior.
