Essay About Myself
School, to me and among many peers of my age, is not a distant term. I have spent one–third of my life time sitting in classrooms, every week since I was seven years old. After spending this much time in school, many things and experiences that happened there have left their mark in my memory. Some are small incidences while some have had a great impact on me. However, regardless the degree of significance, things that happened all contributed to shape the person that I am now.
I was accused of cheating for the first time when I was seven years old. It was during the term final where the performance of the test indicates all the progress the student had made throughout the semester, so its importance was never over emphasized. Though...show more content...
Everything started anew, I was all by myself. While I was busy getting used to the school and making new friends, I also discovered a new passion, soccer. Through soccer I was able to meet some of my most loyal friends. We would often get together and play soccer against other classes.
The school required a test for admission, so the competition was getting fierce. The teachers focused a lot on our academics and tried to squeeze as much time as they can from us to study. As the result, we were not allowed to play soccer during our free time because it hinders us from studying. Maybe it is human tendency to break laws, but the gang of us didn’t want to conform to that rule so sneaking a soccer ball to school and keep it away from the teachers became an everyday challenge. It was amazing the kind of ideas we came up with for this task. Soccer added spices into my otherwise boring school life, and it served as a channel between me and my fellow classmates. Through soccer we found a common ground, that we were able to know each other more and support each other no matter what happens. It gave us a sense of unity, and it was very important to me. Even now I cherish the pact I had with them back then – the support that helped me to stay on the right track during my rebel teenage years.
My homeroom teacher at the time had the most impact on me than any other mentors I had. People say

Memoir
Everyone has their own stories, no matter it is meaningful or not it is their life and their memories. When I told to write a memoir about languages, I could not come up about any ideas. So, I ask Professor for help, my Professor told us that everyone has their own stories and it is interesting, because that is your experiences not ours. People like to hear stories, because it is not their experiences and they want to know what have you been through. Here are little stories about myself.
I was born and grow up in China, Tianjin, a big city where just an hour away from Beijing. Since my mom wants to give me a better living environment, and better chance of education; so, we decided to move to US. When I moved to the US in 2012, I was only sixteen years old and barely spoke any English. Even I had learned English for all my school life in China, I still didn't understand when other talking to me. The new life was totally different, it was tough and challenging for me. The new language environment and culture differences were giving me a hard time to fit into this country. When I first came to Chicago; Mother and I went through a great amount of troubles trying to enroll me in a high school. Many schools turned me down because of my lack of English skills. They wrote me a letter and send me to an ESL class at a community college.
As soon as my mother settled me down in a small apartment, she left me to work in another state. She needs to make money to support me and our family, so I have no choice to live alone by myself. I was facing the challenge of fending for myself in a totally strange environment, where I didn't know enough English to ask for help. When I was in China, I never had to cook, shop for groceries, and walk to school. For the first time in my life, I had to do everything by myself. I had so little money that I could not afford to eat at restaurants every day. Therefore, I had no choice but to cook for myself. At first, my mother was the only person I can ask for advice. But when it came to practice, it felt ten times harder than it sounds to me. I remember practicing cutting on potatoes. My left fingers were often wrapped with Band–Aids. But I disregarded the pain and kept practicing it
In One To Two Sentences Tell Us About Myself?
Two Sentences
"In one to two sentences, tell us about yourself." The terrifying question that you see hundreds of times throughout your life, whether it be on an application or survey, and if you're like me, the struggle to answer it is never ending. How do I describe myself to other people, when in reality, I hardly know myself. Yet, somehow, I am supposed to tell who I am to everyone else in only two sentences? Sure, I suppose I could write that I have three cats, three dogs, what my favorite color is, etc. I could talk about where my family comes from, or the color of my skin. However, is that really who I am? Is that what defines me? Is that my own personal culture?
Maybe I should talk about music. Surely that says something about who I am, and how I see the world, seeing as the...show more content...
So, I was the first, which meant that no one in my family quite understood the culture that comes along with it, and let me tell you, there's a lot of culture that comes with bassoon. They didn't understand the different world that I belonged to now, the different type of people that I now belonged with, and my new musical family I had found. Music taught me many things. First of all, music taught me to take a step back and take a look at what's going on before I make a decision. When you first play a piece, you have to look at the whole thing, glancing over each key change, accidental, and dynamic marking along the way, before you can start to play. I have learned that it's important to do the same thing in life. You have to look at all the facts before you decide what to act on. Now I know that you're asking yourself what that has to do with culture. Well, that outlook has changed how I look at everyday choices, and some not so everyday choices, such as deciding that I wanted music to be a big part of my life, and since then, it has
Defining Myself Essay
Sometimes a person may feel that they have no purpose in life. Finding out who you are just takes the time of sitting down and thinking of the importance in your life. Who am I? I am Mercedes Kimberly Kingston, and I am a person with different personalities, characteristics, and identities. The many ways, in which I identify myself, in fact, are the ways that define who I am. My Identity is something only I can fully define. I have a little brother, which makes me a sister; I have two loving parents, which makes me a daughter; I am in college studying medicine, which makes me a student; and I have wonderful friends in desperate need of support, which makes me a wonderful best friend. Before anything, I am a big sister to...show more content...
It is seen as an essential part of learning and using what you learn in class. But when you get loads of class work and have very little time to finish it, then it becomes an unnecessary burden. Yet, sometimes, for me, it is the fact that I procrastinate that prevents me from completing a task. For college student, like myself who is working to pay for college, large amounts of class work usually brings lots of stress and fear of not being able to get good grades in many of my classes. Yet, I have support from my family, friends, and some peers who encourage me to put up a good fight in reaching my goal. I am a student that has gone through so much to get here, where I am. There were times that I had strong feelings that I would never be in college, just because of the negative energy I forced upon myself. Since pre–K, I have had this problem that if I can't do something I just give up, and stop trying. I still have this problem, but I have learned to get a control on it. The biggest problem was graduating from high school. I never thought that I would ever graduate. But I knew, as a student, I should at least try and show my teachers that I am putting effort. And now, I'm in college, studying pre–med, and hoping to become either a pediatrician, or a NFL Doctor. Growing up as a daughter to a single mom, was, I think, the best experience ever. I was, and am still, very spoiled. I always had everything that I ever wanted. And

Development of Self Essay
Development of Self
The development of self starts at a very young age. When a preschooler is asked how are they different from other children, they usually look at their self concept. Self concept is their identity, of their set of beliefs about what they are like as individuals. Most preschoolers give inaccurate statements about their self concept. They usually overestimate their skills and knowledge. Preschool–age children also begin to develop a view of self that reflects their particular culture considers the self. An example of this would be to look at the different views as self between the Western culture and the Asian culture. Children's views of self become more differentiated. As they get older, children discover that they may be good at some things and not so good at others. Children's self– concepts become divided into personal and academic spheres. During middle childhood children begin social comparison. Social comparison is the desire to evaluate one's own behavior, abilities, expertise, and opinions by comparing them to those of others. The self–esteem of most children tends to increase during middle childhood with a brief decline around age of 12. Some evidence shows that members of minority groups have lower self–esteem then those of the majority group. Children build a sense of self efficacy during their elementary years. Self efficacy refers to learned expectations that one is capable of carrying out a behavior or producing a desired outcome in a particular situation.
Reflective Essay About Myself
Walking into my fifth grade classroom for the millionth time, I searched around the room to see if there was anyone like me. A girl with chocolate skin. For as long as I can remember, I was the only one in my grade, ever since I started school. But this did not mean I did not have friends. Caterina and I were best friends that year. She was from Venezuela, had white olive skin with long blonde hair, and light eyes. One school day, when we were walking to P.E., she said to me "I like your hair because it stays in place." A little taken back, I was not sure if this a compliment or not, but I said thank you anyway. Her comment had stayed with me for the rest of the day. I began to wonder why my hair grew the way it did and if I could change it. This was, thus the beginning of my insecurities. Going to school every few months with a different hairstyle would raise a few questions for my classmates. Different styles, such as, box braids and marley twists, would change my attitude because I no longer looked the way I felt most of the time, ugly. But because I knew my look was only temporary, I did my best not to draw attention to myself. As I advanced grades, I always hoped there would be someone like me. Not necessarily student. After fifth grade, I figured I might as well conquer eighth grade alone. It would at least be nice to have a teacher to talk to about when I get angry about each day instead of keeping everything bottled up. A person "... to vent [my] frustrations,
Essay About Myself
There are three very important aspects that play a major rule in my life. They can be categorized as intellectual, social, and spiritual. My intellectual self is interesting because I am mainly right–brained which means that I tend to use my creativity more than my mathematical skills, also making me a visual learner. My social self consists of friends, family, and my surroundings. I spend most of my time at home with my family. Whenever I am with my friends, I observe their behaviors and listen to their opinions. I am more of an independent type of person. Being with different people has influenced me into appreciating different cultures and beliefs. I find that I can only recall long–term memories if they are important to me, or if they are dramatic experiences. A few examples of my childhood memories are my mother reading to me, my grandfather playing his guitar, and my dad relentlessly teaching me how to ice skate, no matter how many times I fell.
The people who affect my social life the most are my family and friends. I have an extremely close family that has played a major role in my life. They are whom I spend most of my spare time with. My family usually gathers every weekend for dinner. I am also very open to different religions, cultures, and practices because I know many people with different backgrounds and beliefs. Since I've been influenced by various people, I've learned at a very young age to never judge people by how they look, dress, feel, or act. I am very fortunate to have learned these lessons, because many people still do not understand the importance of accepting differences. In a group, I prefer to listen to what others have to say, and then contribute to the discussion. I try to listen so I am able to compare them to my own thoughts. I enjoy working in a group, because it gives everyone an opportunity to incorporate their own ideas. My social self is most greatly influenced by my family and friends. I believe that my spiritual self is the most important out of the three. Although I have a certain religion that I belong to and practice, I believe in a bit of

I have always grown up in a family that speaks only english so I find it interesting to go over to other people's houses and hear them communicating in another language. On top of all of this meeting different people has also opened my mind to new ideas. For example, in school when we work in group projects we collaborate and communicate with people who think differently than us then work together to figure out whose ideas will work the best and how to improve them.
Another factor that plays a part in why I am shaped how I am is my family's economic circumstances. I have always had access to anything I needed and for that I have extreme gratitude because I know some people have a lot of difficulty in life. Since I was born into a family with such good economic circumstances I have been lucky to have lots of opportunities. One Opportunity I had as a child was participating in taekwondo. I did taekwondo until I reached a blackbelt which took years of hardwork and dedication. I had to memorize forms, Spar with other competitors and break boards in order to continue to move up to the next level. Taekwondo also helped keep me in good shape and fit when I was younger. Another Opportunity I am grateful for is the skill of playing the piano. At first I was not all that enthusiastic about playing it but my parents has signed me up and insisted I
The Self Essay
The Self Every situation that an individual is exposed to throughout life, helps mold our "self." As humans we have the ability to see ourselves from the outside, and all through life we try to see what others see and our "self" revolves around the generalized other. We observe how others perceive us and we make conclusions depending on our observations. How we act around others depends on the image we feel they have towards us.
Charles Horton Cooley, a symbolic interactionist, concluded that our sense of "self" develops from interactions with others. Cooley described this process as the...show more content...
On the other hand if you see yourself as an individual who can communicate without a problem and you see that you can keep others interested in a given conversations, your reaction is more positive. Through this looking– glass self we develop a "self" concept. Depending on the observations we make concerning the reactions of others we develop feelings and ideas about ourselves. The reflection we see in the mirror is either negative or positive depending on the feedback we get back from those around us. Misjudgments of the reactions of others become part of our "self" concept also the misinterpretations of how others think of us. Self concepts begins in childhood but it continues to develop throughout life. As we observe how other people react to us, we modify our "self."
The "self" is never a finished project, and it continues to change as our life takes different turns. Our "self" reacts to the environment that we are in. As the "self" expands we put together the different reactions making us a unique individual. Every individual has a different way of thinking and therefore they make their own choices about certain situations. Going through different life changes, means the "self" is expected to change to accommodate the life stage we find our selves in. The way we perceived things when
Characteristics Of Myself Essay
I was born fourteen years ago and I have acquired many qualities in those fourteen years. One is I like to see myself as a very relatable person who many people can talk to. Many of my friends tell me that I am very relatable and a very honest person who says their honest opinion, which I can only agree with. Another word I hear a lot from my friends is that I am a chill, also known as relaxed or easy going. Listening to my friends is another good quality I believe I have. I can always sense when something isn't right. I believe I am also fairly good at judging people's character, so I think in some way that saves me from hanging out with bad people and also knowing which ones are the good ones. Adapting is another thing I am good at because of the many times I have moved. That also helps me get good at making friends all kinds of places, even in different countries. I get told a lot that I have a lot of friends and honestly I'm not totally sure how I have become friends with so many people. But I am not complaining. Most of my friends also say I am trustworthy and cool. Another thing I get told a lot is that I am hilarious. I mean I can just say the simplest things and my friends will laugh. All of these qualities are qualities that I like about myself but I also feel that many of my friends have the same traits. I like to hangout around people who remind me of myself. Most of my friends are funny and kind. They are all trustworthy and of course very cool. My friends are
Essay On What You Know About Yourself
What You Know About Yourself
Some students have an identity, an interest, or talent that defines them in an essential way. If you are one of these students, then tell us about yourself.
Growing up I was a kid that loved to try out all kinds of things ( and still do ), that I knew nothing about, though some people thought I was wired because of it. Such as wanting to play field sports, art, skating, ice skating, hockey at one point, music, and the list goes on because the more I learn about these activities I never knew about, the more I wanted to try and see if I have a talent for it or not. Though my siblings would make fun of me saying that my only talent was reading, sleeping, and being weird, but I eventually provide them wrong when I...show more content...

Yet, with the other sports I was actually pretty good at them, but not that good with softball, I got so nervous one game because of the preacher I fealty all around me, making me freeze in place, causing the whole team to lose the game and me not playing in anymore games because of that one time misshapen. But what was most important to me was the fact that I got to be in Orchestra the type of music I wanted do since elementary school has finally came to me,and on that day I became the happiest girl there in that classroom full of beautiful string instruments. The teacher who teaches for that class was named miss Powers and she was a awesome music teacher, I still miss her till this day every time a play missing instrument, I also did art too, but I was not in it as long as I
Essay About Myself as a Writer
I don't consider myself a very good writer. I write when I am made to or when I have something that I need to say that I can't just tell someone. I keep a diary. Usually my diary is just a record of what I have done that day. It's not so much about my feelings. I don't really like talking about my feelings, usually because most of the time I am confused about what exactly I am feeling. I tend to keep the feelings that I do have to myself, to protect myself from getting hurt.

I'm not trying to make my life all depressing because it hasn't been all bad. And I realize that people have had things a lot worse happen to them, in their lives, and I should be thankful for what I have. But no matter what I have I just never seem truly happy. I always have this front up, and it seems like everything is going great, but deep inside, I'm falling apart. This comes out in my writing, and I think that writing is a good release from all of this. I always try to do my best when it comes to my class work and my writing, but I know that my writing isn't the best by any means. I always find it important to the best job that I can do, on school work and also in life.
I think that a lot of what got me through writing papers in middle and high school was my mom. She was so great about reading over and correcting my papers. She stayed up many nights doing that for me. Not because she had to, but because she wanted to help me. There were so many other things she could have been doing, but instead she was helping me, and that means a lot to me. I'm kind of nervous about doing this all on my own. I'm excited thought o see what I can do on my own. I am so excited about starting new here, with a clean slate. I think that
Narrative Essay Kindergarten
All I wanted when I was little was to have beautiful long hair. All of my dolls had hair down to their waist , and I longed to have hair like them. Unfortunately for me, my hair did not grow very fast... at all. I was practically bald until I was three; and my hair was only about to my chin when I was ready to start kindergarten. So there I was, on my first day at Foreign Language Academy. I was in Señora Vargas's Kindergarten class holding on to my mom, dreading the moment she would have to leave. I had been really excited about starting school and getting to wear my navy blue dress and my hellokitty backpack. Actually being in the classroom, however, incredibly nerve racking. Most of the parents were mingling and asking questions to the teacher, while the kids tried to find their place. Some kids had already began to play games with one another. Others, like me, were more shy, still clinging to their parent. In all the commotion, I noticed a girl who had the longest hair in the entire class of kindergartners. She looked a lot like me except she had freckles, a pink cast on her arm, and the hair I had ever seen. Her hair was the same color as mine, but about triple the length, and with more curl in it. Jealousy immediately swept over me. It seemed like this girl had everything I had ever wished for in my entire life. I also thought casts were really cool at that time because I did not really understand that broken bones hurt, or that you couldn't really move
My Personal Goals Essay
As a child and even as a teenager one tends to make dreams and set goals for life. On occasion these goals are far stretched and sometimes even fairy–tale like, we tend to see life through a rose–colored glass, not taking into account the many sidetracks life throws our way. At that stage in life our goals tend to be less focused and somewhat unreachable. However, the process of growing up, or maturing, tends organized and center our goals, we learn to make compromises and set goals for our goals. There are different types of goals, short term and long term. I have learned to separate the many goals I have into three main categories: family, professional and personal.

In order to achieve this goal my husband and I have decided to also dedicate more time for the two of us. We have also decided that for the next three year we will spend Holidays as a family so that we may create our own family traditions, we will do whatever is in our power to spend Holidays together, that includes not working or making other plans with the rest of our immediate families.
On many occasions my personal goals have come before my professional aspirations. A career in the medical field has always been something I have looked forward to. As a child I wanted and dreamed of being a doctor, however due to the choices I made in life and the priorities that I had not thought of, I have come to realize that my childhood dream may not come true. Yet, I was able to compromise and make short and long term goals that will lead me into a career in the medical field. My long term goal is to enter the medical field world and be a respected contributor to it. I want to be able to help others in the time of need. In
Essay about Know Thyself
"Know thyself" – Socrates. Self–awareness is the act of being fully perceptive about one's innermost self; an essential part to one's life. However, this self–inquiry is not easily obtained. "Self–awareness and its accompanying egoism profoundly affect people's lives, interfering with their success, damaging their relationships with other people, and undermining their happiness." (Leary) One's self can become distorted through the influence of society and their beliefs. "Knowing others is wisdom, knowing yourself is Enlightenment" – Tao Tzu. This introspection surpasses the ordinary understanding of life and grasps the aspect of one's innermost self. The insightfulness brought to one through self–awareness leads to the utmost happiness...show more content...
This pervasive "commentary" adds new meaning and interpretation to what is occurring in actuality. The ultimate experience one seems to go through is changed due to the first–person perception and the opinion which one holds about what happened rather than the actual event. This causes an unbalance in what actually occurred and what one perceived to have occurred. (Leary)
At times, the one–sided view causes an overestimation of positive qualities one may possess, thus interpreting events to make one look or seem more favorable to others. One "over perceives" the better qualities one posses and "under perceives" the more unfavorable characteristics one possesses. One also favors things or events more closely related to one's self. One claim more responsibility when something is done well, than when something is done poorly, which is proven by ones denial of responsibility or control. Furthermore, the thought process one engages causes judging based on self–interest and major distortions in one's view of others and ultimately of one's self. These distortions one has over one's self and others help him or her lose sight of who one actually is or who someone else could be. Assumptions, effected by ones bias perspective, do not facilitate the achievement of one to be true to be one's self. These assumptions lead to one caring about how others perceive one another.
Judgment is also greatly
Descriptive Essay About Myself
I was walking home from school, on a bright, sunny day in late September when it happened. I hadn't walked home from school in a long time. Today, I stayed late for a volleyball practice. I told my parents that I knew the way, that I could get home by myself. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I had a great life. I was always happy, and for good reason. Teachers regularly described me as "bubbly, energetic, and cheerful," as it was hard to find me without a smile on my face. I had straight A's, was semi–athletic, and lived in a neighborhood where almost everyone was well–to–do, with both my parents being successful lawyers. I had every luxury imaginable for a sixteen year old girl. The nicest clothes and gadgets. I also had some amazing friends, who always had my back when I was in need. Ember, Blaise, and Liana. Kind of unusual names, I know, but apparently, that is what the rich, white, and famous do with their kids nowadays. Give them strange names, so nobody will mistake them for anyone else. I figured this out because every kid in my class had a name like this, except me. My name is Emily. Emily Austen to be exact. I only fit two of the above guidelines for those with strange names. My dark brown skin was a stark contrast to the skin tone majority of my private school had. Although America is a free country, it's still can be hard for people of colour to rise to the top. I have tightly curled black hair, which was extraordinarily poofy. Because of the poof factor, I usually

I never thought I could dig as deep as I did, and have a better understanding of who I am as a person just by writing a single essay. I was not expecting the amount of self–awareness that I gained through this class. I really enjoyed the hermit crab essays, because they really guided me to find my true feelings. It was hard for me to get started writing at first and then once I got started, it was almost impossible to stop. I love the feeling that I am in control of what I am writing and there are no restrictions and that I can be vulnerable in my writing. This class really helped me show the vulnerable side of who I am. I was sometimes moved to tears while I was writing because, I realized things about myself that I never thought to be true before. I would get so excited that I would read it to my boyfriend, family and friends. This class was in no way easy, but it was definitely worth it for many reasons. I learned how to become a better writer, I learned about myself as a person, and I constructed pieces of writing that I didn't know I was capable of. Some assignments became easier as time went on because I became a stronger writer. However, I think the hardest one for me was having to write about the room I was in. It didn't interest me because it didn't help me dig deeper into my feelings or anything of that matter. I also didn't enjoy having to respond to different pieces of writing, because it
Personal Self Assessment Essay
Self assessment is a process in which you examine yourself in attempt to discover and learn more about yourself. Your likes, dislikes, behaviors, attitudes and habits can be found during this process. You can use the discoveries to your advantage by accepting or changing strengths and weaknesses. I plan on using this course to enhance my personal skills to become a better student and find success in earning my Bachelor of Arts degree at Ashford University in Social Science. Self Assessment is the first step in my successful future.

I have discovered some interesting things I have noticed in myself before taking this course. For example, my learning style I have noticed is the visual learning style.
With this, I prefer to see and read information to full gain comprehension. If I forget the data, or not clearly understand it the first time read, I have the option of reading it over. I do not always trust myself to absorb all information the first time around. I take a lot of notes to look at. Notes help me remember even though I may not read the again, I can refer to them in my mind after writing them down. I am not sure if just anyone reading them would get anything out of it, but at least I know what they mean.
I like to take my time with material, but am not always given the allotted time to do so. I also like to keep a written list of things to do to refer to. I am comfortable with my learning style, accepted it as my very own. I am not sure if changing it this late in life is such a good idea. I have got by this far, it must work out for me.
I have identified my personality style as being extroverted, one who becomes easily energized by others, and outwardly expressing thoughts as long as I am fully understanding context and material being discussed. If I have no idea what is being addressed, I am better of keeping quiet to save myself from
Characteristics Of Myself Essay
We, as human beings, have many characteristics and traits that we view of our self positively; however, some traits do change due to our insecurity of other individual judgments which may lead to the outcome of others viewing us differently. This report will briefly explain the way I see myself portray to the society and how other majority individuals see the individual I truly am.
The qualities I consider that I do not have for my personality is I am not creative, confident, compulsive, curious, humorous and selfish. This shows that I am an individual who is selfless or inquisitive. Although, I am not confident nor am I compulsive or humorous this demonstrates I am introverted from the society and would like to be hidden in the dark when it comes to presentations or meeting new strangers. I am not proud of this since I realized I care way too much about what others have their opinions on me. If I were confident and cared less about what others thought about me, I would have the traits as compulsive, confident, humorous and much more. In addition, this is one of the reasons why others think I am shy at times due to my lack of confidence. Therefore, I do have to work on putting myself out there to the society which will slowly happen.
I believe that I am friendly, kind, reliable, hardworking, punctual, and ambitious. Ever since I was a child, my parents brought good manners and positive moral teachings into me. One of the lessons they taught and I must obey is that I
On Being Unique and Being Yourself
La Rosa 4
Every person should be as much of an individual as they can be. Mankind should be who they are on the inside and try to prevent themselves from being someone else. This action results in sin. You should be your own person, be who you were meant to be, and strive to be as different from everyone else as much as you can. This can be seen when Emerson states that, "Your own gift you can present every moment with the cumulative force of a whole life's cultivation; but of the adopted talent of another you have only an extemporaneous half possession" (160). This infers that all of your individual thoughts are full ideas, while only half of another's ideas are in your possession. Your own gifts and abilities are worth more than another's if you are to maintain your individuality. If you adopt any ideas from someone, that person will have kept their individuality while you have lost some of yours. Your mind is your own and no one can touch it except for you. You can think what you want to think and no one can change that. Each and every person has their own life to live and they shouldn't devote their valuable time to worrying about other people. The search for self–reliance comes from loving something for its intrinsic qualities and this is more often than not, our own individuality. The conclusions that one draws from an individual's actions or beliefs can all be different, but the facts or constants used to understand these feelings should be the same from one
Essay on Finding Yourself
How can one truly know who they are? It takes years of experience to understand yourself; your likes, your dislikes, your abilities, and your passions. Sometimes society will agree with these things, and sometimes it won't. Self–identity is the result of trial and error in terms of resistance to the cultural norms of one's society, and the lessons learned through such resistance, as demonstrated in Munro's An Ounce of Cure and Boyle's Greasy Lake.
An Ounce of Cure tells the story of a teenage girl, whom remains unnamed throughout the entire story, who was brought up in a small town where drinking was frowned upon, thinking that she was never good enough for her family. She had her heart broken by a boy at school and became depressed over...show more content...
Alice Munro demonstrates the learning of oneself through the resistance to society via the girl in An Ounce of Cure. Although she knew it wasn't a good idea, and that her parents and community wouldn't approve of her drinking if they found out, she resisted that cultural norm and did it anyway. By drinking too much and getting drunk to the point of being physically sick, she learns that it was not the best idea. By the social consequences of the rumours spread across her town afterwards, she suffers loneliness and learns that the boy who started her depression in the first place was not worth the embarrassment, nor the experience itself. Munro depicts a teenage girl growing up; learning about herself and coming to terms with who she is. The girl learns that alcohol (and pills) are not the solution to a broken heart, and that her time was wasted being miserable over a boy who dumped her.
Greasy Lake depicts the story of a young man, also without a name, who tried to build a reputation for himself as a "dangerous character" (p. 33), much like many other young men of the era. He did many things he considered 'bad', such as wearing torn–up leather jackets and sniffing glue. It was popular for the people of his crowd to take their parents cars to Greasy Lake, a local hangout for young adults which was in all reality just a dumpy murky pond. One night, the boy and his two friends
