Summary of Holes by Louis Sachar Essay
HOLES LOUIS SACHAR
Stanley Yelnats is under a curse, one that began with his no–good–dirty–rotten–pig–stealing–great–great–grandfather and has followed generations of Yelnats. Stanley has been falsely convicted of stealing Clyde ?Sweet Feet? Livingston?s, a famous baseball player, sneakers from a homeless shelter. Now he must attend a boy?s detention center, Camp Green Lake, where bad boys dig holes all day, every day, digging holes five feet wide and five feet deep, to become good boys. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake, But there are an awful a lot of holes. When Stanley first gets to the camp he meets Mr. Sir a man that dresses like a cowboy and has just quit smoking. Mr. Sir tells Stanley that if he wants to run he can...show more content...
Sir, when he asked what they were looking for he was told nothing they are just building character. The digging got easier after awhile for Stanley. Stanley?s great great grandfather was named Elya Yelnats. He was born in Latvia when he was fifteen years old he fell in love with Myra Menke, Myra was fourteen and turning fifteen. Her father decided that at fifteen she should be married. Elya went to ask her father for his daughter?s hand but so did Igor Barkov, a fifty–seven year old nauseating pig farmer. Igor offered his fattest
Pig and Elya offered a heart full of love. When Myra?s father heard this he cried out in laughter and said he rather have a fat pig. Elya went to Madame Zeroni seeking her wise council she told him to forget about Myra and go to America.
Awhile later she decided to help him, she told him to take a piglet and bring it up a mountain and let it drink from the stream as it is drinking from it he is to sing to him as he is drinking. When the pig is fully grown and he is wed to Myra he will bring Madame Zeroni to the top of the mountain and let her drink from the water and sing to her, if not she would curse him and his bloodline for all eternity. The song Elya was to sing was this:
?If only, if only,? the woodpecker sighs.
?The bark on the tree was just a little bit softer.?
While the wolf waits below, hungry and lonely,
He cries to the moo?oo?oon,
?If only? If only?
So he did as he was told and
Examples Of Stereotypes In Holes By Louis Sachar
Stereotypes are assumptions people make about the characteristics of a person or group. Obnoxious, narcissistic, rebellious, emotionless, unloyal, out of control and up to no good... are a few wide number of stereotypes that are accredited to teenage boys nowadays. Stereotypes are everywhere: social media, television, magazines, etc... Stereotyping a person or a group of people in a negative manner has a lasting detrimental effect on those who experience the prejudice. Stereotyping causes many misconceptions about teenage boys. This could be seen throughout the novel, Holes, the author, Louis Sachar, endorses and challenges the teenage boy stereotypes by the diversity of the characters' persona, actions and characteristics. Essay on Black Holes
Black Holes Every day we look out upon the night sky, wondering and dreaming of what lies beyond our planet. The universe that we live in is so diverse and unique, and it interests us to learn about all the variance that lies beyond our grasp. Within this marvel of wonders, our universe holds a mystery that is very difficult to understand because of the complications that arise when trying to examine and explore the principles of space. That mystery happens to be that of the ever elusive, black hole.
This essay will hopefully give you the knowledge and understanding of the concepts, properties, and processes involved with the space phenomenon of the black hole. It will describe how a black hole is generally formed, how it...show more content...
What this means is that it is impossible to use the laws of physics to predict the structure of the region after the Cauchy horizon. This breakdown of predictability has led physicists to hypothesize that a singularity should form at the Cauchy horizon, forcing the evolution of the interior to stop at the Cauchy horizon, rendering the idea of a region after it meaningless.
Recently this hypothesis was tested in a simple black hole model. A spherically symmetric black hole with a point electric charge has the same essential features as a rotating black hole. It was shown in the spherical model that the Cauchy horizon does develop a scalar curvature singularity. It was also found that the mass of the black hole measured near the Cauchy horizon diverges exponentially as the Cauchy horizon is approached. This led to this phenomena being dubbed "mass inflation."
In order to understand what exactly a black hole is, we must first take a look at the basis for the cause of a black hole. All black holes are formed from the gravitational collapse of a star, usually having a great, massive, core. A star is created when huge, gigantic, gas clouds bind together due to attractive forces and form a hot core, combined from all the energy of the two gas clouds. This energy produced is so great when it first collides, that a nuclear reaction occurs and the gases within the star start to burn continuously. The hydrogen gas is
The Theme Of Holes By Louis Sachar
«If you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into a good boy.»
Louis Sachar is an award–winning author of twenty–five books for children and young adults. Holes was first published in 1998 in America, and Louis Sachar, the author, have won several awards for the book.
The genres of this book are drama and friendship, but you can also find a small dose of comedy and a little love story in this book.
I mean that the main idea of the story is that friendship and acceptance sometimes can be the difference between life and death. That you should accept people as they are, and don`t judge them before you know their whole story. In this case, everybody, except Stanly, judged Zero (or Hector, as he was later known as) and thought he was...show more content...

Therefore, Stanley isn`t too surprised when he in unjustly is sent to a boys' detention center, Camp Green Lake, where the boys were told to build character by spending all day digging holes exactly five feet wide and five feet deep.
It does not take long for Stanley to realize there is more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the warden is looking for something. But what could be buried under a dried–up lake? Stanley tries to dig up the truth in this humorous and child friendly book, that will leave you speechless.
The story of Holes switches back and forth between the present and the past. It is actually hard to guess how the book is going to end before we have heard about the «past». The transitions are gentle enough between the past and the present so that the reader which is great. When the present is finally understandable everything seems to fall into place. This literary device is called a flashback. It is the past that is explaining the present. Symbols such as the title is also a literary device that is

In the novel, Holes, Sachar wrote about Stanley writing to his mother about how he is at Camp Green Lake. ""Dear Mom, Today was my first day at camp, and I've already made some friends. We've been out on the lake all day, so I'm pretty tired. Once I pass the swimming test, I'll get to learn how to water–ski. He stopped writing as he became aware that somebody was reading over his shoulder. He turned to see Zero, standing behind the couch. "I don't want her to worry about me," he explained. Zero said nothing. He just stared at the letter with a serious, almost angry look on his face. Stanley slipped it back into the stationery box.". Stanley lied in his letter to his mum because he didn't want her to worry or know what he's actually doing at Camp Green Lake. "Stanley took hold of Zero's forearms and pulled him upright. Then he stooped down and let Zero fall over his right shoulder. He stood up, lifting Zero's worn–out body off the ground." In this example, Stanley helps Hector/Zero up the mountain and takes care of him afterwards. Stanley and Zero challenges the stereotype of males not showing

Have you ever been in the right place at the wrong time? Well Stanley was and now his life has changed forever. The book Holes by Louis Sachar is a story about friendship and bravery. Stanley is sent to camp green lake after being accused of stealing shoes. The theme of holes is growing up because the story involves youth such as Stanley, and in the story Stanley takes responsibility and shows his innocence. In Holes Stanley is around 13–14 years old. He was accused of stealing a pair of shoes, and was sent to camp green lake, a camp for boys to dig holes as a punishment. While he was there he met other boys, like Zero, that he later became friends with. "You may have done some bad things, but that doesn't make you a bad kid."

My favorite place is far, but not that far away. The only way you can get there is by a car. It's my grandmother's house. I like to describe it as the place the book Holes by Louis Sachar took place. Sure, there arent any children digging holes but in the summer it is extremelly hot and Its located in eastern Europe literally in the middle of nowhere. When I was younger I thought of this place more as a punishment for the summer holidays. But as I got older I started finding this place more and more favorable than my house here in Prague. My grandmother often asked me to do chores and favors for her around the house, which I, a 5. Year old at that time completely disliked. My grandmother lives in a big house near the border with Hungary and

Holes essay,
A good novel consists of exciting characters, an interesting setting, plot and story line, but most importantly a good novel conveys certain ideas about different messages the author is trying to get across, Louis Satcher in the novel holes does exactly this. Throughout the novel Satcher is constantly conveying the message of racial tolerance and intolerance, perseverance and has used clever techniques such as linking references from the past with the present to create an interesting novel filled with important themes about life.
Satcher is constantly showing discrimination throughout the novel, one way he has done this is through the character of Stanley. He shows this when Stanley is sent away even though he is...show more content...
Another example of these links is when Stanley finds the lipstick that once belonged to 'Kissin Kate Barlow' of old Camp Green Lake. Irony is also used in creating the links from old camp Green Lake to Modern Camp Green Lake, an example of this is that Kate Barlow robbed Stanleys great grandfather and is the reason that you and your family are so poor now, and yet when you gain a lot of money at the end of the novel it is because of her.
So from the points I have mentioned such as the realistic themes and messages conveyed such as racial tolerance, intolerance, discrimination and perseverance, the use of clever written techniques such as irony and the constantly changing context of the setting from the past Camp Green Lake and the modern Camp Green Lake and the interesting use of humour throughout the novel with the links between the past and the present Satcher has created a great

A character study of Kissing Kate Barlow
In the book Holes, by Louis Sachar, I chose the character Miss Katherine Barlow also known as Kissing Kate Barlow. Miss Katherine was first a schoolteacher, but then was the most feared outlaw. In the book you find out the story of how she became an outlaw from a schoolteacher. Miss Katherine Barlow was a sweet schoolteacher from the nineteenth century at Green Lake. She is also known for her beauty and her spiced peaches: "...full of knowledge and full of life."
(Sachar, 102)
"She was very pretty. Her classes were often full of young men, who were ... interested in the teacher..."
(Sachar, 102)
This shows that she was valued in the town of Green Lake. Most young men, and villagers liked...show more content...
Miss Katherine didn't like him back. She rejected his requests to go on walks, and ride fancy boats that he owned. Instead she liked the onion man: Sam. He was black, and he sold onions around the town with his donkey Mary Lou.
Once Miss Katherine asked Sam to fix the leaking roof in exchange for some jars of her peaches. After he finished with the roof, she asked him to fix other things. Each time she tried to find a reason to talk to him and be around him. She did this because black people weren't allowed to go to school.
When Sam had fixed the schoolhouse completely fixed the schoolhouse, she was sad, because she didn't get that much time to talk to him anymore. She liked him, and they kissed: "'Oh Sam,' she said. 'My heart is breaking.' 'I can fix that,' said Sam. He took hold of her hands and kissed her." (Sachar, 111)
This shows that were both in love. They didn't even take in mind that black and white people couldn't kiss or have a future together. They simply didn't care about it.
Unfortunately black and white people weren't allowed to kiss:
'It's against the law for a Negro to miss a white woman.'
This shows that there was still a racial problem at that time, and Sam the onion picker wasn't allowed to kiss Miss Katherine.
The positive thing about Miss Katherine is that she was well educated and friendly as a teacher. Then her life changed completely and she became the opposite of what she
"Holes" shows the importance of friendship in times of trouble and danger. Discuss 'Holes' by Louis Sachar is a phenomenal and superlative narrative. Entwining three remarkable stories from diverse generations and genres, Holes demonstrates immensely proficient writing dexterity, explicitly depicting the significance of earnest and genuine friendship in times of life's trials and tribulations. This is exemplified when an averse and apprehensive Stanley and a despondent and barely conversant Zero develop a friendship. Founded on mutual solicitous understanding this friendship carries them through ominous and precarious times. Elya had nothing to offer in exchange for her hand and was exceedingly distressed. Madame Zeroni had great hopes for him, she yearned for him to go to America and make something of himself. She had told him "Like my son. That's where your future lies. Not with Myra Menke." (p.30) Irritated, Madame Zeroni strived vigorously to convince Elya against marriage to Myra "...can she milk a cow? No... Can she have an intelligent conversation? No... Can she look after you when you are sick? No......... She is silly and foolish...So she is beautiful, so what?"(p.30). Madame Zeroni was exceptionally aggravated, she didn't stop there with the defamations, she even told him Myra's head was 'as empty as a flower pot,' (p.29) but Myra's futility was inconspicuous to Elya who was only fifteen, immature and naive. Madam Zeroni ostracized seeing Elya dejected and against her better judgement she decided to help him. She gave him a piglet and instructed him to carry the piglet up the mountain and sing to

Black Holes
Within our galaxy alone, there are millions upon millions of stars. Within our universe, there are millions upon millions of galaxies. Humans have known the existance of stars since they have had eyes. Although interpretations may have differed on what they were, they were always thought of as white glowing specks in the sky, but the mystery does not lie within what we can see, but what we can not see. There are billions of stars lighting the darkness of our universe, but the question lies in what happens when one of these enormous lamps burns out. Upon many speculations, one of the most facinating is the black hole theory. Not any star can become a Black Hole. For instance, the possibility of our sun becoming a black hole...show more content...
Even though a black hole's gravitational pull is enormous, it does have its boundry. This boundry is called the "event horizon". This event horizon is the point where the black hole's gravitational pull begins. Once you cross the event horizon, there is no turning back. As stated before, the escape velocity of a black hole exceeds the speed of light, and since going faster than the speed of light is impossible, so is escaping a black hole's gravitational pull. This explains why all the black holes do not swallow everything up in the universe.
Inside the event horizon is where the major speculation begins, just what happens once you cross the event horizon. Well, once you cross the event horizon, you'll be spinning around the center at the speed of light. As you get closer to the center, or what scientists call the "singularity", the theory of the speghetti effect comes into play. That is, the gravitational pull of the center of the black hole is greater at your feet than your head, thus pulling stronger at your feet, and stretching you out to a point of infinite thinness. This same force is what causes the tides in our ocean, hence the name "tidal forces". The time in which it takes you to witness this effect depends on the size of the black hole. A smaller black hole means that
Essay on Black Holes
Black Holes
Black holes are objects so dense that not even light can escape their gravity, and since nothing can travel faster than light, nothing can escape from inside a black hole. Loosely speaking, a black hole is a region of space that has so much mass concentrated in it that there is no way for a nearby object to escape its gravitational pull. Since our best theory of gravity at the moment is Einstein's general theory of relativity, we have to delve into some results of this theory to understand black holes in detail, by thinking about gravity under fairly simple circumstances.

It is possible there for a star to be swallowed by the black hole.
The pull of gravity on such a star will be so strong as to break it up into its component atoms, and throw them out at high speed in all directions. Astronomers have found a half–dozen or so binary star systems (two stars orbiting each other) where one of the stars is invisible, yet must be there since it pulls with enough gravitational force on the other visible star to make that star orbit around their common center of gravity and the mass of the invisible star is considerably greater than 3 to 5 solar masses. Therefore these invisible stars are thought to be good candidate black holes. There is also evidence that super–massive black holes (about 1 billion solar masses) exist at the centers of many galaxies and quasars. In this latter case other explanations of the output of energy by quasars are not as good as the explanation using a super–massive black hole. A black hole is formed when a star of more than 5 solar masses runs out of energy fuel, and the outer layers of gas is thrown out in a supernova explosion. The core of the star collapses to a super dense neutron star or a Black Hole where even the atomic nuclei are squeezed together. The energy density goes to infinity. For a Black Hole, the radius becomes smaller than the Schwarzschild radius, which defines the horizon of the Black Hole: The death explosion of a massive star, resulting in a sharp increase in brightness followed by a
Stanley Yelnats 'Change In Holes'
"We cannot become what we want to be by remaining what we are" said Max DePree. Change can't be stopped; it's something that happens throughout life. Stanley Yelnats is one of many characters that endures change in the book "Holes," but the changes that he goes through are what makes him a better person. In the beginning of "Holes," Stanley is timid, insecure, and insincere, but as his fellow inmate, Zero, influences him and their relationship becomes stronger, he transforms into a bold, self–confident, and loyal boy.
In the beginning of the novel Stanley is timid, insecure, and insincere. When talking to X–Ray "Stanley wasn't sure what to say. X–Ray was clearly the leader of the group, and Stanley didn't want to get on his bad side." (Sachar...show more content...
When climbing "Big Thumb," stanley wanted to take a break and just rest for the remainder of the day, but he decides "As long as Zero could keep going, he could keep going too." (Sachar 168) He had a choice to give up for the day and rest, but he saw that Zero was still going even though he was in worse condition than him. Stanley saw the steadfastness in Zero and it motivated him to keep climbing up the mountain. As Stanley and Zero faced challenges when traveling up the mountain, they ended up making an agreement to help each other, when needed. When Zero helped Stanley in a time of need, Zero ended up with "... deep gashes in both hands. He had held on the metal blade of the shovel, keeping it in place, as Stanley climbed. (Sachar 166) Zero's decision to help Stanley out, even if it meant getting hurt in the process, showed that he was willing to sacrifice himself. Zero's ability to sacrifice himself for a friend taught Stanley selflessness. When Stanley ended up getting blamed for stealing Mr.Sir's sunflower seeds, he was surprised to see his hole had been dug for him when he returned. "Why'd you help me? Stanley asked. Zero turned around. You didn't steal the sunflower seeds." (Sachar 96) At this point, Stanley is realizing each boy's true colors. Zero didn't have to dig the hole for him. Anyone but Zero should have dug the hole for Stanley because both Stanley and Zero didn't have a part in stealing Mr.Sir's seeds. This is a great representation of Zero's selflessness. As you can see, Zero played a huge part in influencing Stanley. Zero represented a steadfast and selfless character, which rubbed off on
Holes: A Literary Analysis
Foster states that geography is not just hills, streams, rivers, mountains and plains. It's so much more than the physical literal "geography". He says that it helps define a character. Not to mention, it helps give a "feel" for the book. For example: In A Series of Unfortunate Events, setting plays a huge role on the "feel" of the book. Count Olaf's house is bleak, dreary, and generally not that great of a place to be. The book itself was solemn as well, fitting into this dreary "geography". However, in "Holes", the setting there is dry, hot, and it's a punishment for the boys for people troublemakers. They're supposed to dig holes until they physically can't dig anymore. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout and Jem were both raised in the south
Holes–Why is it a good novel for teenagers?
In this essay I intend to look at why the book 'Holes', is a good novel for teenagers to read. Written by Louis Sachar in 1998, it is a modern novel telling readers a story about the life experiences of a young boy called Stanley. The story revolves around Stanley being unfairly acquitted for a crime leading to him being faced to cope with life at a juvenile detention centre. Along with this main plot, there are several other underlying smaller plots that contribute towards the success of the story as a whole.
I will examine the various reasons for why this book would appeal to teenagers. There are three simultaneous plots, which creates more excitement and suspense for the...show more content...

Warden claims; however, the counsellors let the boys know that the warden wants to be alerted if anything interesting is dug up. Stanley finds a fossil, but it doesn't quite qualify, but a gold–coloured tube engraved with the initials K.B does.
Stanley builds a good friendly relationship with Zero and gets along with him more than anyone else at Camp Green Lake. Stanley helps Zero to read, and in return Zero helps dig his hole. It doesn't take long for Stanley to realise that there's more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the deceitful warden is searching for something, and before long Stanley begins his own search– for the truth. Fate conspires to resolve it all– the family curse, the mystery of the holes, the drought that destroyed Green Lake, and also, the legend of Kissing Kate Barlow, an infamous outlaw of the Wild West. The great wheel of justice has ground slowly for generations, but now it is about to reveal its verdict. Because the story is based upon the life of a teenager in an unusual setting, it may appeal to teenagers of this present time as it may enable them to imagine and understand what life would be like for them in a more unfortunate setting. Being a teenager myself, I can understand what teenagers might feel whilst reading this book. At the end, Stanley was more of a hero

Have you ever been falsely accused of something you didn't do? Well, this happens in the realistic fiction book, Holes by Louis Sachar. I strongly believe that you should read this well developed book, for it has fascinating characters, the great message, and the astounding plot. He is overweight, lonely in school, and gets bullied frequently. In the camp, the requirement every day is to dig a hole five feet deep, and five feet across in every direction. Though some might say that the book does not explain enough, and it gets confusing. I firmly disagree. It may seem weird to have such an odd camp for punishment, but the storyline does eventually explain it. As I said before, Stanley eventually finds out there is more to the camp than everyone thinks. Many times, it's because of the explanation that makes the story interesting! I assure you that everything fits in like a puzzle piece, and that's what so great about the book! Overall, this argument is pointless. Continuing, the story includes many different mini–stories that fits together. To illustrate my point, Stanley Yelnat's great–great–grandfather apparently put a curse on the generations of Yelnats. The grandfather did not do an important task that he was suppose to do, and a curse settled upon the generations. He "worked hard, but bad luck seemed to follow him everywhere." This happening to the grandfather first, causes Stanley to have unfortunate timing. This shows how everything together. All in all, this is another reason why you should read Holes.
As you can see, the book Holes has much to offer. Louis Sachar, the author, can give you one of the best stories you've ever read. The well developed characters, the great message, and the beautifully constructed plot are all great reasons why you should read it. Overall, I can reassure you that this book will leave you interested for periods and

A Essay About A Hole
A Hole in my Heart In this image I see my family gather together near my sister's casket. If we look even closer, we will notice that everyone is not crying, but is putting a smiling face. It feels as if everything was already even though it hurt inside. It almost seems that we can hear my sister saying, "Everything will be okay, I am still near you." I chose this photo because one, it depicts year I will be writing about and it's when my sister passed away. This photo is very important to me because even though all of my family members weren't all there, we will were able to take one last photo with my sister. This is the year twenty fourteen. I chose to write my inquiry paper about this year because not only that it put a whole in my heart with what happened to my sister, but a lot of people the world were lost because of a disease outbreak, and loosing of a comedic actor. It was an important year in my life because my world turned upside down with the lost of my sister. It was big change after lost her. In the year twenty fourteen, I never knew in my life that it would be the beginning of a fall in my family. We never knew that a piece of us would be torn away so quickly. Out of all the things that had happened in my life. The most heartbreaking was the moment that my sisters pulse slowly started to decrease.
